A little girl that goes to the same child minder as my daughter is 18 months old. She has just come back home from a family tip to Borneo. Wow! I have thought. Her mom knows to do long haul plane rides before her daughter reaches two years old. A child from 7 days old to 2 years old can travel for just 10 percent of the adult plane ticket cost. I took my disabled son to Portugal at 4 months old, then to Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia at 13 months old. Then I began him on long haul trips. I was pregnant with my daughter when I took him aged 20 months old to South Africa. We visited Cape Town and the Garden Route. Then he went to the child ticket price at aged 2 years old which is around 67 percent of the adult plane ticket cost. When my daughter was 11 months old I took her and my disabled son on a flight to Vancouver in Canada. She had her first birthday in Victoria on Vancouver Island. She was around 18 months old when we went to the Caribbean coastline of Colombia. So for those trips she traveled for that very low infant airfare. Now it costs much more for two child flight and one adult. Do you think her family was sensible to take her on a vacation to Borneo? Is it great to travel when kids are under 2 years old do you think?

I always travelled with my kids already as they were little babies. It never was a problem I also never had screaming/crying kids. Under the age of 2 years or so you only pay administration cost but no chair and no luggage. No problem to me I always teached them to travel light. What they can carry themselves they can bring along. I stopped traveling at a certain moment (health problems but also working a lot). Weird thing is that the daughter being little at that time and who has been in other countries way less, is also the one who loves to stay at home (in her room). My youngest two (now 9 and just 7 years old) love to travel and feel home everywhere. Since they are at a school for all kind of nationalities they are also used to the fact most of the other children are travelling all over the world as well. Most of these children have 1 or in some cases 2 parents who is not dutch. So they do visit family all over the world. They get into a plane as easily as other kids get on their bikes.

Hello Maxi. How are you ? I have been away for quite a while, traveling on my business trips. Got back just recently. I know you are a world traveler too. Well, I always enjoy traveling to different coutries, relaxing, refreshing, and educational too. I have been to Java, but not to Borneo yet. Children would enjoy having fun in different cultural environments, for sure !

The only problem I can see with taking a small child on a trip is that they won't remember it. So, taking a trip with a small child isn't for the child, but for the parent. Having said that, if they want to take the trip, more power to them.

when my kids were little, it didn't matter what the cost was, my kids were with me. I traveled a lot. They traveled with me. I often took things along that would keep them busy and content. I think for a piece of mind, it is good to take them with you.

We traveled, by car mostly, with our son when he was just a few months old. It was easier because we could take care of him, its not until they get older that they need to be more independent. When they are little they are more independent on their parents so its easier to take them where you want to go. Just take lots of pictures so they will know they were there in case they want to visit again.
