Are you aware that there can be three different passwords for facebook?

Today I was reading a discussion about hacking in mylot. I made a search in mylot and that brought me to a page wherein discussions are there about hacking. In that page it is given that facebook allows three different passwords. But some condition attached. Supposing our facebook password is ourPassWord You see in the above password P and W are only in capital letters. Facebook will accept for this account changed password as given below: OURpASSwORD yes. here the two letters that were in capital are given in lower caps and those letters which were in lower caps are now given in uppercaps. The third variation is OurPassWord In this the first letter alone is changed into capital letter whereas other letters are as in the first password. I came to know of this new information and thought it fit to share with members. Are you aware of this earlier and are there any other interesting aspects about internet?

Facebook has actually acknowledged this. In explanation, they state: “Our passwords are not case-sensitive. We accept three forms of the user’s password to help overcome the most common reasons that authentic logins are rejected. In addition to the original password, we also accept the password if a user inadvertently has caps lock enabled or their mobile device automatically capitalizes the first character of the password. We feel this does not significantly impact the security of the user’s password or their account. Additionally, we do not store our passwords in plain text we use several encryption technologies and techniques to maintain the security of our information.” You can actually find several articles about this "feature" posted on the Internet. Most of them agree that it doesn't constitute a major security threat and that there is, at least, some logic behind Facebook's policy, though whether it is valid or not depends on how careful you are about typing passwords! It is always possible to CHECK whether you have Caps Lock on and most mobile devices have the option of whether to capitalise the first letter or not!

I'd prefer 'diligent' to 'smart', Riyauro! A smart answer isn't always the best by a long chalk! (There! That was a 'smart' retort!)

owlwings Thanks for this write up from facebook. I was not aware of it. but even with this variation as you say facebook is protected one. yesterday I tried to log in thro another computer and it was not allowing me. afterwards i had to change my password. I use facebook mainly to tell candidates about my blogs posted.

Hello ravi bhai, thank you for sharing this. This is new information for me but looking at the details, I ask myself what is the use of 3 passwords when they should all be variations of the same password? Any idea?

See Facebook's official explanation, which I reproduced above.

Thank you owlwings for the official explanation. I honestly feel this feature means less security for a fecebook user for their account.:)

hello ravi sir., facebook has got 3-3 passwords. OMG! i din't know that something like this even existed. Anyways, for me it doesn't matter much because, I hardly use facebook these days and I am even planning to get my facebook account deleted.

No sir, absolutely no problem. Just that I do not have any time to spend on that and I do not find a need with that account. I just left it and all I get is the texts from people asking me to check their posts and like their pics and comment on their status. Just thinking that once i delete it, I wouldn't have to do all those..

You can have copies of your facebook profile just by taking a back-up of your profile.. To get the back-up, go to , account setting, there you will have, download a copy of your facebook data.. that is sort of a back-up for your facebook data. Then coming to the deleting of your account, i'm actually searching for that.. will let you know if I can help you. I actually forgot the way to do it. Maybe, for time being, you can de-activate your account and then activate it if you plan to get back to facebook soon. By de-activating, you won't be on facebook, still, once you get back, your account will be the same as you had left!

hello ravi, All I know is that we can use special characters, numeric and yes- capital letters in variations. I don't know about using 3 passwords on Facebook account- but I have set questions to verify my facebook account before anyone can access it.
@ravisivan (14079)

jaiho that is right. you have set questions for which answers are known to you only. that is very correct.

I have only known about it through your discussion. Thanks for sharing! This could be really scary. So we must really have a unique password for an account and as much as possible a mixture of alphanumeric symbols.

jenny it need not scare you. please read the response given by owlwings(no.4) above. it is self explanatory,. however we must change password say once in three months.
