As by some of my discussions we've been on a bit of an avacado kick around here. I was talking to my hubby about saving the pit and trying to grow an avacado tree just for fun. I told him how we'd go about it and he kept telling me it was for something other than an avacado. Eitherway he's wrong in this case and I saw what we would need to do online. Though, I know if I was to be successful with one I'd need to keep it potted as our temps dip below 45F and just put it outside in warmer seasons.
I thought I'd ask if anyone has had any success with growing an avacado tree? if so did it ever fruit? I've read it takes years for them to grow but one page suggested if it did produce fruit you could not eat it... is this true? why would that be?

Hi i am an avacado fan and I have grown one at home it is like 1 year old plant and it has grown about 10 feet already. I brought it from a friend who has a big tree and it was fruiting too much. one had fallen and grown under the tree so he gave that small plant to me. I planted and it is growing like crazy., I think it should take about 3-4 years to start fruiting. but it does fruit and it is very good for health. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.

Good Luck with yours fruiting! I've heard the trees take a long time to mature enough to fruit the only other one I know that takes a while are blueberries as well.

I have at least 8 avocado trees on the farm and one in my garden of my house where I live now. Small plants grew from seeds and we planted them and ares till eating the fruit. I adore avocado and when it gets very ripe it can be mashed and used as a face mask. Put a towel under your head though and mix it with a little oatmeal. Your skin wull be so sift and smooth. Wash off gently with warm water after about 20 minutes.
