I didn’t know that there are various nick names which are derived from other names or from their real names. I thought Andy, Mary, Rob, Bret these are names but I have come to know that these are nick names and they are derived from names for examples Andy is derived from Andrew, Rob from Robert etc.
I want to know names and the nick names because it would be helpful to get to know the real name of person. I know few of them and I am collecting the information about the nick names and real names, actually I want to make a table in which I can have the nick names and real names.
Another name is Gail which is derived from Abigail; it is hard to understand because it does not start with the initial. There are many other nick names and real names which I do not know and want to know.
So, are you aware about this and what are the nick names you (don’t) know?
Some nick names are easy to get and some of them are really hard. Some celebrities are famous and known by their nick names not real names like Brad pit etc.

I worked in a school for years and saw a lot of nick names. Some names have several nick names, such as William, nick names: Will, Willie, Bill, Billy, and Liam. Savannah also has a couple : Vanna, Annah, and Savey. Richard too :Rich, Richie, Rick, Ricky and Chard. (I actually had two different kids a few years apart called by the name of a vegetable!)

I've often wondered why Bill and Billy have come to be nicknames for William. B does not sound anywhere close to W. same with Bob for Robert. Liam is actually an Irish form of William but has now become a nickname from non-Irish Williams.

Yes the B in the William nick names and the D in the Richard nicknames too have confused me. As for Liam I have often wondered which came first or if like Gail the nickname has become a name.

Bob is a common nickname for those whose real name is Robert. Tom is for Thomas, Mike is for Michael. Chucky or Chucky is a common nickname for Charles as well.
Probably, Brad is a nickname for Bradley

Growing up I didn't have a nickname like my friends. My family called me by my whole name, and at school since there were like three or four of us sharing the same first name, I was called by my last name. It was only when I started working that I started using my nickname which is also part of my user name.

I came to know about this a few years ago. I also realized that in our country "topeng" was the common nickname for Christopher and "Paeng" for Raphael or Rafael. i think there are still many which I couldn't remember right now, but this nicknames are no longer as popular as they were. I guess modernization has also changed the views and culture of our society as most nicknames here now are westernized or just absurdly unique.

Well, I, working here on Mylot, as well as in the various chat, I come across a lot of nicknames. Often it is easy to go back to the real name of the person, however, in most cases, is impossible.
For example yesterday I met one of my compatriot with the nickname "LaCeci", I discovered that his real name was Cecilia.
For example my nickname I use in each site is "alberello" (as you can easily see), but it is light years away from my real name is Alessandro.
Alberello in fact, is an Italian term which translates in English means "little tree".

Those names were you mention turn into shortcut nicknames. My name is Peter and my real nick is Ginggoy. Goy for short. I am not curious about their nicknames.

In our place, some nicknames are very far from their real names. It is difficult to connect their nick names to the their real name since we fund of calling names in our dialect though our real names are just common names that are also used in other countries.

I've seen foreigners who came here adopted a nickname perhaps to blend in better or to have an easier name to be called. A common example is something like 'Moe' for 'Muhammad'. Many are called Joe, Jack, John, or any other common westerners names; but as soon as you meet them, you'll know those are only their nicknames.

I often wonder why here in my country Bong is a popular nickname. It could come from real names of people I know such as Ferdinand, Ramon or Christopher. More often than not, nicknames are the shorter version of the real names or could be somewhat familiar or sounds-like the original. But I really don't know why when it comes to nickname "Bong". Hope this helps to fill in your table of nicknames.
