My cat is too smart for his own good....

I have 2 cats but one of them is as naughty as a 2 year old. Outside my apt. door is a long hallway and I'm in the middle of it. If he hears me get my keys he runs to the door trying to get there before me so he can get out the door. A few times I have let him go just to see what he would do and he just started walking to the next apartment. There is seldom anyone in the hallway but when there is anyone he runs right back to my door. It's gotten so I have to get my keys out very easy and hope they don't make any noise just like I do when I have to open a can of something for myself. They always think I'm opening a can of food for them. I've started taking my cans into the bathroom to open them! Are your cats smarter than you? I think mine is!

I used to have a cat that did this...as soon as I opened the door, out she'd run into the hallway. She couldn't go nowhere because there was a downstairs door that was locked. But sometimes she would run up the stairs and then I'd have to go after her to bring her back down. One day I came home and she got out without me even knowing it. It was later in the evening so I didn't see her run past me at all. I ended up locking the door and was standing in the kitchen clearing off some stuff, when all of a sudden I heard all this racket out in the hall and by my door. Sure enough, it was her jumping on the door to get back in. She was scared out of her wits, and as soon as I opened the door she darted back in and ran into the living room. Nothing scared her except that she was locked out. I use to let her out in the hallways after that and watch her, but as soon as I started closing the door, she'd run back inside. It was funny because she was such a little character. Unfortunately, I had to take her back to the shelter (no kill shelter) because she wouldn't stop biting and would attack my ankles all the time, and bite hard. I did love her though.

there must be something wrong with the cat for simply biting you that much, though in general it's just a play thing for them. you could have lessen the sharp of her teeth, wasn't there a way to do it? at least she knows when to get in when ever you close the doors

I'm sorry to hear you had to get rid of your cat. They are so much like a family member for me. He's become so heavy it's hard for me to pick him up to bring him back in so now I just shoo him in.

Your cat is really funning and smart from the series of actions he takes when he hears the sound you make. I love kittens, which are so cute and interesting. We have a few kittens born by a mother cat this summer in about July. When I saw them for the first time in the hallway on the first floor, I start to love them till now, which are growing much bigger than four months ago. They always sit on the seats of our scooters placed in the shelter, but there is one thing that I do not like about those cats. They use their paws to ruin our leather seats. But it is ok since they want to find some warm places for them to sit or lie. In fact, the leather of my seat is damaged by the paws of those adult cats.

wow that sounds so cute. I would love to see a video of a cat catching a ride on a scooter! You should video it and put it on youtube.

We have always had cats in our household, and whoever said animals were dumb has never had cats. Ours know exactly what time it is, as soon as it's feeding time they sit by their bowl and meow until they get fed. We also have a stray cat that we feed, and he has this clever trick of sitting on the door step and pretending to be a meerkat, it stretches up and looks so damn cute, and he knows he's cute so you open the door and give him some scraps, but he won't take the scraps if you throw them on the ground, he will only eat them if you feed them to him by hand! We closed the curtains on the back door because it's not fair on our cats who see him getting fed, do you know what he does? He goes round to the other door and sits there, talk about crafty!

I have a recliner with a massager and heat buttons. I will be sitting in it cross stitching and Tink will come up hit the buttons then get on me turn around and lay down. I think he likes the vibration and goes to sleep in my lap. LOL he does it almost daily now I really dont know how he learned that maybe he saw me pushing the buttons and got the idea. have no idea.

yes, he probably likes the vibrating becuase it probably sounds like his mother purring so he gets nice and comfortable. I'm sure he saw you pushing the buttons and got the idea.

we used to have cat and they stayed in the garage. but one of them would always dart inside the house whenever he hears the front door open if anyone is coming in or going out so i called him Bullet. the funny thing is, once he's inside, he'd stop in his tracks and look around not knowing what to do, so we shoo him out again.

Bullet sounds like a perfect name to me. Your right once they get where they are not used to they run back to where they feel the safest.

Hello! How cute! You know cats, or any other pets, if given proper care, they tend to bond and communicate more with their masters. Thus they learn things no ordinary stray pet or pet no given much attention can do. But then again, there are some pets or cats, for this matter, are born really smart. Given their animal instinct and 6th sense, they can be very smart.

I do believe cats have a 6th sense. They seem to see things that I don't and are great bug catchers.

Hello ctryhnny, I think the cats are accustomed that when you open a can of food, they would always assumed that it's for them. before, my cats were usually outside the house so that they wouldn't bother if they are stayed outside. but yours is different, they will always ask for it when ever they have a chance or the opportunity to get inside. they re still animals, but worth the love and naughty as always

Ha! Mine does the same. As soon as he hears me outside he starts meowing and climbing up the door, making opening it tricky. I think it's because he always wants fed.

oh I get what you mean, we have 2 cats too, a tuxedo and a birman, tuxedo one is the smart one. Every morning he will meow in front of balcony door until someone opens them, he wants out to watch birds from there, its not enough to watch them through window lol and even when you open cans both of them always come and sit there until you give them to sniff so they see what you eating then they will go away, of course if its not meat that you're eating :D
