I got an email telling me the best value destinations for 2013. They suggested Rio in Brazil, Gothenburg in Sweden, Namibia, Bolivia, Portland in the USA, Spain, Slovenia, Nepal and Georgia. I visited Rio in 2012 and I found it really expensive. I really loved it there and as it was Easter maybe for that it was more pricey than usual. I found Sweden all it wildly expensive. I found Slovenia very cheap indeed. If I went to Georgia I would spend a lot on getting a visa. What do you think?

No matter where you go, it depends on the time of the year if it's cheaper or more exensive (during holidays .. holidays I have here... it's always expensive no matter where I go and if it's rainseason for example over there). Personally I mind less to save for a journey and visa but I do not want to make high costs at the place of my destination. So I would try to travel in a cheap(er) period, go to a place where I don't need to spend much money. I wonder why Spain is in that list since it's not really a very interesting country and way too expensive for what they have to offer. If I had to pick something out of your list it would be Namibia, otherwise Georgia. But to be honest I doubt these are the best value destinations (for 2013). I wonder who says so.

I visited Romania and Bulgaria in the summer of 2006. I found Bulgaria very cheap indeed. When I was a young person I stayed in dorms in youth hostels which I found fairly cheap. In Singapore I had to stay in a hostel in tower block. I also don't know why they put Spain on the list. I am sure India would be a better choice that is cheaper.

Wow, what places to visit, they all sound like they will cost a lot of money. Our destination for 2013 will hopefully be Scotland. We have been before but would love to take the children back again

With my sister years ago I visited Edinburgh and we found it beautiful. One day I would like to see the islands and beaches in Scotland. Good luck to your family traveling there. I love it when I get a cheap flight to a long haul destination like I did in 2005 to the Maldives and in 2006 to Mexico.

I haven't been anywhere in the list. I wish I could go on all those places someday. Among those places I think Georgia would be the best for me. I've learned that many people from my country (Philippines) travel to Georgia. I believe Visa is upon arrival for us which is great. A lot of people are saying that it is really beautiful there and people are nice.

I agree with you--Rio is quite expensive, as is Gothenburg (Gotteborg) in Sweden. Flight may be cheap but food, beverages and entertainment are not. Both are worth visiting however! As for Portland, USA, do they mean Portland, Oregon or Portland, Maine? I think the Portland in Maine would be much cheaper than the Portland in Oregon. I have been to Maine; have not been to Oregon. Maine is a fabulous state to visit, especially if you like the outdoors; however, Portland, although quaint, is something of an old industrial city and doesn't have that much to do. Oregon would be beautiful, and I am sure there is a lot to do in Portland, Oregon, but it would be more expensive. Hope that helps!

Hi there. I really wish to travel to the Philippines. A flight there would be pricey but once there it would be quite cheap to medium prices I think. I hope you visit your friend in Brazil.

Well, I happen to live in Gothenburg and it is a nice place :-) Flights and travel is pretty close to the UK. Food and drinks are overall more expensive but you can get good value for you money with a bit of help, and compared to Stockholm the prices are very good. Accommodation is a bit tricky.. Gothenburg as one of the largest exhibition centers in Sweden and that tends to fill all the hotells and drive the prices up. A positive side is that there is not really any bad hotells, they are all clean and ok for a night,s sleep. I love booking.com since they have reviews for people and they tend to give a good view of the hotell. My suggestion would be to use Ryan Air for a flight, booking.com to find a hotell and then get a map and ask people on the street for help! Almost everyone speek decent english and can give you good advice.

It seems that the next Fifa World Cup and the Olympics will be held in Rio. It doesn't sound so nice when I heard that it was really expensive. As at that time it will be much more expensive because it is the important event. I know you have been to many places and I wonder which place that you haven't visited yet in this list. Perhaps you shall choose that one as your next destination
