No Cyber Life

Today we All seem to have mobile computer devices file laptops, tablets or smartphones. Go to any public environment and you will find people busy texting, typing and chatting. Recently, I came across a little oasis from all this cyber ; a cafe that does not welcome anything electronic at all, not even a cellphone. Now this is the kind of place that I like. Nothing irritates me more than somebody sitting at the next table chatting inanely away on their cellphone. Should there be more technology free places for us to relax in?

I like the idea of having technology free days at home. Imagine all that time freed up.

I wonder what we'd do instead? Bake more bread or just sit and watch the world go by.

Perhaps we'd just find another distraction. I have a great capacity to do nothing!

Make a start on all those imagined but unstarted projects. Or all the other things I avoid doing by logging on.

Most places now have wifi connections so we can see many people with their gadgets. I guess they'll better go to places with internet than a technology-free places. There are only a few who would want to go to a technology-free space. Businessmen maybe meeting their clients, couples, etc. Thanks for sharing and happy mylotting.

Perhaps we have too many interruptions in our lives these days.

I guess for some time in our lives we need to stay away from these gadgets. Maybe, having a vacation somewhere, no calls, no text. Only you or with your family. No connection from other people. I guess that's one way to enjoy a vacation.

Perhaps if more people remembered their manners, we could go out and socialize, dine and the like without these sorts of intrusions. Some people need to stay in contact at all times (medical personnel or parents)-I wouldn't deny them an occasional evening out, but if you notice that your phone is vibrating, take the call outside. What REALLY irritates me is when people don't hold the earpiece in the proper place and feel it necessary to yell at high volume on their cell phone. I'm hard of hearing, and I'm pretty sure that I keep it down, but my boyfriend talks so loudly on the phone, I cringe! He says he can't hear the other person.

I'm so accustomed to turning the ringer off and putting it on vibrate, I'll lose it if I'm not careful. When I purchased my phone, I was trying to make a go of my business and often had to answer the phone. Now if I'm in a place where it's inappropriate (say church), I'll let it go to voicemail. Unless it's extremely important, then I'll make my apologies and leave if I've got to take the call.

The first question I always ask is "do I actually NEED to make or take this call?" If I do, and the occasions truly are few and far between, then I would excuse myself and go outside. Usually I don't carry my phone wirth me anyway but if I do I always tell whboevert I am with and apologise in advance if it rings.

That sounds like a wonderful place to hang out! I do wish there were more technology free places. It is so irritating to hear people talking on their phones while I'm buying something in a store or even at the library. And everywhere I go people are texting. If there is no cell phone activity, there are big screen televisions in restaurants to distract people from conversation. I got a humorous email the other day that showed people in various activities like having dinner together, attending a sports event, taking the kids to a playground, etc. In every one, nearly everyone was looking at their cell phones. It was funny but sad, too. Enjoy your oasis.

I was going to send you the link but then I remembered that they don't have one! LOL. We seem to be addicted to technology. Of course it does make lives easier sometimes, but it is lovely when it stops!

Hatley, that's one of my pet peeves! It's none of my business what these people talk about. I was always taught that conversations are private unless I'm specifically included and eavesdropping is rude and unacceptable. These people force us to eavesdrop on their most personal details! They don't care if the world knows their business and to me, that is crass and rude. I don't know of any cafes that ban cell phones but I wish public gathering places would ban cell phones. If there is an emergency, you can step outside and deal with it. Remember phone booths with doors? Maybe we should install some specifically for cell phone conversations in restaurants and such and demand that phone calls be made there!

On festival nobody wants to go in relatives home because they feel time is wasting. friend p1 But still some villages or town people are gathered in a place to enjoy the festival. But in city it is very hard.

hmmm i think i will go with you for that. There should be a universal law about excessive use of cellphones. and really very annoying. As if they are just the only people living in the world. In a public transport, you need to sleep and rest from a day's work, but you can't because this person talks so loud on the phone. Gossssh so insensitive, even if you give this person "the look and the spout" signs. No effect at all. Isn't park a technology free space?

I have Yet to visit a park where cellphones were banned; but there may be some. I like silence but seem to be in a minority these days.

Hi... I'm always on cell phone too... It is a way for me to keep in touch with friends, whom I cant meet everyday. Can't help it... My family members get irritated with it, whenever I go home.. My friends find me in solitude-with-my-phone, always... It is a totally different era... If someone had told me in my childhood that this is how 2012 would be, I'd have laughed at it... Yes, gone are the days when we'd write letters and postal services were so valuable.. I've not written a letter in the past 15 years... All I got is e mails, my smart phone etc... Your idea's brilliant, and it feels good when I'm not busy with my phone... We'd gone for a trip into woods recently, there was no network coverage... I'd a good time for two days...

I agree with you... Yes, balance is what is needed... The human mind, is not able to maintain the balance properly... If you check the history then you'll find that whenever 'we' the humans, find something useful, we use it above the fullest, if its an appropriate term... For example, check the post industrial evolution era... We used the machines and natural resources... We used and have been using them and it has come to an alert level... If we were so balanced then the nature wouldn't have felt threatned by us... It is great to hear though that some of us still write letters.... Trust me, I've forgotten the format of a letter... :-)

As I said above, we need to achieve a sense of balance with these things. I still write letters!

When I was working as a cashier, there were a few times that I would be working away and I hear the customer's conversation. I thought they were directing their convo to me. I would answer them only to realize that they had a Bluetooth gadget stuck in their ear and were talking with someone else!! Alrighty then!! So I would act like nothing happened and just keep on scanning the items. Geesh!!

I have had that experience too. I have even been known to respond and only then realise that I am taking to someone on their phone.

Oh my, where is this place? I'd like to book a table please. I'd love it if this kind of thing catches on. People just don't natter to one another face-to-face anymore and I think it's very sad.

Oh, we can balance it, right? I need a smartphone to keep contact with my friend, my lover, however i can't use it whole day, i just try to check and reply or some time chatting at night only. I am not a type person who stick to phone, computer, etc whole day. At night, i just use a computer without internet for watching funny movies....

A balance is exactly what is needed. Technology when it is appropriate and peace and quiet as well.

Dear P1ke, such a cafe would make me a very happy camper as well. You know I have a cell phone as I need to tell my husband which train I take home and whether its in time or late again, or ask him for help when I am stuck on my long way home. And surprisingly I dont even use the tablet PC any more I have leased over a year ago when I still cared for my mother and wanted to read my mails when I get to my small hotel room, for distraction from that caregiving after work. That cell phone is off all the time now as I am home and I dont need and use it. I even did not make one phone call during the five days I already enjoy home. Okay I am online to play catch up with all the mails in the folders but there is a life aside from the electronic devices and I dislike these people who always chatter into their mobile phones just to prove how important they are.

I rather like the idea of cell phone free cafes and restaurants. people can be so rude when they are on the phone and don't realise just how irritating they are.

I fully agree with you. Knowing there are cell phone free compartments in some trains you would think its quiet in there but these oh so important people dont care. They blare into their damn phones anyplace and anytime.....

That is the way technology takes its grip on our lives. Most things and activities in life are fast turning to be largely mechanical on account of indiscriminate technical input.

Hello friend ! Is there still have place like that now ? Yes maybe a convent or retreat house. Our world today revolves around cyber , so hard to be detached from it. We do business , education , socialization and other earning ways in cyber world. But i want to know why does it irritate you when to some it made them happy even to some seems their world already. Will it be okay for you if can have no mobile for a day ? I am admiring for your love of tranquil life. Me ? seems so hard for cyber is like my lifeline. Have a beautiful day !

Hello there! That's a nice place that you found there. Very unique. With all these technology and gadgets, you would seldom see a place where no one uses a mobile phone, a tablet or any other gadgets. While its true, technology now is overwhelming and we often get hooked up with it that sometimes its already suffocating. But then again, we cannot also remove that fact that it is our era now. Technology. But yeah, with all this stuff, its nice to have a place for once that has no gadgets around us.

Want Technology Free-places? Why asked it from somebody, when you yourself can do it or even provide it yourself? When you are in public places where people scattered are busy chatting, texting with their gadgets, why bother yourself with what they are doing? Shot yourself off, your soul from this people who disturbs you. Just focus with your own business. Anyway, you can free yourself from this addictive technology by shooting off your gadget for a moment, locking your door and try some ways of meditations, yoga or mantra. Or find some remote places for a day or two for vacations or retreat.

Nothing electronic at all! Wow that sounds like heaven. I wouldn't mind spending a day at a place like this. No cellphones and no facebook sounds quite interesting. However, I think one should actually take such technology-free breaks. Get in touch with nature. Spend time meditating. Spend time reading a fantastic book. No cellphones and no internet. I am all for it.
