You are the only one who can decide exactly what it means to be successful in any area of your life. 'Success' may mean many different things to different people. You make that decision for yourself by setting goals. One of the most well-known acronyms for a goal is that it should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. You can find many articles on how to set SMART goals and the goal-setting process in general by using a search engine like this: http://search.mylot.com/search.aspx?t=web&k=smart+goals If you are asked the question "How do you measure success?" in an interview, you will need to be able to tell the interviewers three things about yourself. You would first describe how you would go about understanding the company's goals and how you would help to achieve them. Next, you would demonstrate how well you know yourself and your strengths and weaknesses and how you see those fitting in to the team. Finally, because employers like well-rounded employees, you might mention what you see as 'success' in your personal life.

No, I am not an "HR practitioner" I used to be an IT trainer specialising in teaching computer basics to people looking for work. Many of them didn't feel very 'successful' and needed coaching in understanding what success means and feels like.

Here, use this ruler: FailureSuccess But seriously though, you have to define it using your own goals. If you have what you want to have, then you've succeeded.

You are right when you use the word "Some" I guess the idea of contentment is mainly influenced by man's environment or the culture that he was introduced into.

but knowing man, man never really gets contented, so, some can never really say they're contented

Many people measure success in terms of money and properties. Although many times it is true, for me I measure a person's success by how many people he had helped. I can say that a person is truly successful if he has helped other people especially those who cannot pay or return the favor. I mean, what the point of having lots of money if you can't help other people who are in need?

People measure success in many different ways and on many different levels. When setting goals in life, it’s important that we identify what success means to us personally, so that when we succeed we will know it. If on the other hand, if we were measuring financial success then income would be an accurate indicator. For you, being successful in business may include not only enjoying what you do but also creating value for others. So in addition to being profitable and enjoyable, you also need a way to gauge whether or not you are actually creating value for other people.

My job for a living is business analyst at a bank, but I also doing crafts as a hobby. For me, success means creating value for others. Like Albert Einstein's quote "The value of a man should be seen in what he gives and not in what he is able to receive. Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value." What I believe Albert Einstein was saying in the quote is that the money will only place you in a group of thousands of other rich people. It’s the selfless good deeds you do that will set you apart from the rest and etch your name into history. This goes for business as well. However to answer what is success (which is different for each person), it depends on what your values in life? What are the things that are important to you? By answering these questions you can then come closer to your own definition of success. Surely it can mean carrer or income but for some it maybe a sucessful relationship? The ability to learn many things? Or be helpful for other people? and much other things...

randomarts, I totally agree with you. you have great insights. yes, legacy is built not with the fortune you have made but by the number of people you have touched. I guess you are an entrepreneur by heart, and you are into social entrepreneurship. you value what you give to other people rather than the financial rewards it brings.

I guess that's right, it's just that some thinks having money makes them happy, that is why success is equated to having money.

like passion I equate success with my contentment and happiness in life. I really don't want to be money motivated all the time but of course it's good to have money as well.

I measure success by having a good and healthy family having friends who loves and accepts me for who I am. Ever since childhood I never dreamed of becoming anyone or somebody. Whenever they asked me what would I be I tell them I just want to have a family that is God fearing and not money centered. Getting to know a lot of people and touching their lives, is success for me. Having a simple family and can provide for them is also success for me By the way try to avoid one liner discussions because it might get deleted by the admin. Always check the FAQ's http://www.mylot.com/o/faq.aspx and the guidelines http://www.mylot.com/o/topguidelines.aspx as well.

Success can't be measured like maths. But success is can be understand like following: you have a purpose in your life and work on it until you reach it, so had success on one purpose. Now, if you have several purposes and you reach them all, you may have 100% of success. If you have 10 purposes but reach only 7 of them, you might have a 70%. That's my way to understand success, depending of your own attitud and actions.
