i am not sure what you mean by first and second language, are you asking me which the world first language ever spoken by mankind or by the number of people speaking that particular language? Well, if what you ask is the first choice i would say sign language since our ancestors were sort of half wild animals. If its the latter then, according to wikipedia mandrin (chinese, i suppose) is spoken by over one billion or one million i cant remember but i am sure its mandrin but i have no clue about the second language anyway have a nice day

Hello salma07, this really depends on your point of view. I agree that Mandarin is the native language spoken by the largest number of people, but the majority of these people are in China. English, despite being the native tongue of a smaller number of people, is the widest spoken language throughout the world. This includes Britain, USA, Canada and Australia along with many other places. I would tend to feel that Spanish probably qualifies as the second most widely spoken.

I think that it depends which country a person lives in. I live in England which is a country in the United Kingdom. English is the first language for most of the people that live in my home country. That is great because it is the language used in My Lot and it is spoken in many other countries in the world. My second language is French and I started learning it when I was eleven years old. I did a Spanish language course in 2008 and really enjoyed it. I have visited countries in South America and in Central America where the first language is Spanish. English people are poor with language skills. The Dutch are the best nationality for learning foreign languages.

yup, we have first language and second language. maube for some people they have third language or even fourth..lol.. the language spoken since we were born is our first language i think. like me, my first language is bahasa Indonesia cos im Indonesian. then i learned new language hen i was at school. i learned English. i use English in some opportunities so i can say that English is my second language; it is used but not too often. i can speak in three languages: Indonesian, Javanese and English..What about you?

I think first language is your childhood language, which is called mother tong, and second language is when you grew up and learn. My first language is Hindko language which is my mother tongue and second language is my country language which is URDU language.

In English, we refer to someone's native language (the first language they learned) as their first language. Their second language is the language they learned after...and so on. I have a degree in ESOL. It used to be ESL, which is "English as a Second Language". However, many people who learn English have already learned one or two different languages. So now we say "English to Speakers of Other Languages". This is opposed to an English course for native speakers of the language.

The first language is the first language we learned in childhood and still spoken and the one we use most or are most comfortable with . The second language is the language learned after the first language. Am i right?
