Have you invited someone to Thanksgiving dinner?

Last Wednesday night I did something that I usually don't do, I invited someone that I hardly know to Thanksgiving dinner. The lady doesn't have anyone that is close to her (like family or close friends) and she positively glowed when I invited her to come to my house for dinner. I had been wanting to do something like that for quite a few years. There are a lot of lonely people out there that spend Christmas and Thanksgiving alone. People have gotten so involved with themselves that they forget about people that they might only casually know. I decided it was past time for me to reach out and touch someone else's life. I just sent her an email telling her NOT to get dressed up for dinner, that we are a very casual pair (my boyfriend is going to be eating with us) and we seldom wear anything fancier than a pair of blue jeans and a tee shirt. The lady I invited is a very delightful woman who has a remarkable sense of humor. She is very bright and just recently retired from the Army. She sits beside me in my Human Relations class and we have shared a lot of giggles together. I was thrilled when she accepted my invite, but then it dawned on me that I haven't done a total floor to ceiling cleaning in a few years because of my heart problem. The house isn't totally filthy, but it isn't operating room clean either. So, I sent the email and let her know that I'm not the world's best housekeeper that it isn't as neat as a pin...hopefully that isn't going to make a difference. Have you invited someone you know will be alone to come to Thanksgiving dinner? My parents did it when I was 6 years old (I remember it so well) and we had a wonderful time. I am hoping that this time works out well too. When you're out there getting ready for the holiday, stop and think about someone you know that might be alone for the holiday and their dinner will be a turkey T.V. dinner. If you have enough extra, invite them to dine with you. One more person isn't going to destroy your budget and the good feeling will be well worth the little bit extra. The holiday season is for sharing, not only with the people closest to you but also those who don't have anyone to share their lives.

I love thanksgiving so much but we never have it. We don't celebrate Thanksgiving in Asia. Anyway, Christmas yes we invite people during christmas, some come and some dont of course they are also celebrating on their own. Ohh, that's why I have seen in some shows that during Thanksgiving they invite a homeless man or person. So it is also part of the goodwill during Thanksgiving. I think I saw 3 or 4 movies with Thanksgiving scene and invited someone outside their relatives or friends, a homeless man or woman. I thought it is just a scene as a part of the movie, so there was a sublime meaning on it. Now I know. thanks for the discussion. I have realized something.

It does wonderful things for a person's heart to be able to invite someone who would normally be alone for the holiday to come dine with you. In the U.S. there are some people that do open their hearts and homes to invite someone to join them for dinner, it is out of the goodness of their hearts and their desire to enrich someone else's day. If you come to the States, you would automatically be invited to Thanksgiving dinner.

Lovebear I thnk it is wonderful what you are doing. Thanksgiving is the time to be thankful and so sharing is most appropriate. I would guess not many invite peole they hardly know since it is usually a family and close friend holiday. I will be going to my MIL and bringing her dinner..she is 97 and has 'done her time' in serving everyone Thanksgiving meals. God bless you for your thoughtfulness...and I wouldn't worry about not having an immaculate house..few people do

You're right about few people do have an immaculate house. I am a bit odd because I don't arbitrarily kill spiders or other insects except flies. Spiders do so much good for the environment that I hate to kill them...although Willy and Khuay (my cats) consider the daddy long legs a great delicacy! Also, my mind is more on the artistic side of my life than the organized and clean side of my life. I am planning to put up the Christmas tree on Tuesday so it might take away attention to the not so immaculatelessness of my home.

Well, my parents were stuck with me dragging Maggiepie along because we didn't cook for Thanksgiving. We were roommates back then. This is actually the first Thanksgiving we are going to be at home. The one time my parent's place was being remodeled, we went to a friend's and another year we went to Houston. We aren't planning anything specially except to try crockpotting a ham.
