World Premature Birth Awareness day is today! We proudly support the March of Dimes who fights diligently to help babies born too early. This is something we appreciate so much more because if it was not for the research they have helped to be done three of our children would not be here. I went into labor at 22 weeks with my first and due to the medications they knew would help I was able to hold on to her for an additional 15 weeks, yes I had to lay in bed for that 15 weeks but it was well worth it. Our second daughter was born almost two months early and do to several severe infections had only a 50/50 chance of living. We love her even if she thinks she's a teenager already..lol. Our third daughter was one of identical twins. We knew from the time we where 8 weeks pregnant that only one baby would survive and that the other only had a small chance of doing so. She was born 5 weeks early alone but has a smile now that lights up a room. We had one girl an angel in heaven for 4 years now who though well cared for was stillborn at 20 weeks. How my last one had no issues is a miracle. So if you have had an early bird or haven't know that there is so much hope for these tiny babes.

I also had a premature delivery on my first son. I gave birth 9 weeks before I was due. Well, I think that it happened because first of all I wasn't aware that I was pregnant coz during that time I was still on my last year in College and I would be having my periods every 2-3 months. I guess I was so stressed in finishing all my clinical requirements plus I wasn't eating healthy that time coz I sort of became bulimic when one one my classmates notices that I was becoming fatter. So what I did was, I would be binging then I would force myself to throw up so that I would not digest all of the food that i ate. My son was in the hospital for just over a week. I gave birth in an emergency room and so he was with me in my hospital suite all the time coz he has been exposed and could not be placed inside the nursery.

My son is turning 19 years old this December and he is now 3rd Year College taking up Legal Management. You wouldn't notice any difference from his brother who were born full term. His pediatrician made sure that he can catch up with the correct weight of a baby born in full term. He was really on the heavy side until he was 2nd year high school. Then he trimmed a bit, I guess he has gotten conscious- you know teenager. Then in College, he started going to the gym and now has a really good built. There were never signs of abnormalities emotionally, physically or intellectually. I am so happy that even if I didn't have pre-natal care, he was able to survive the stress I was having and with little nutricious food I was taking in.

My new roommate, D, was born premmie and that was why she's blind now.

Mine all have glasses. My oldest was legally blind at 18 months they started some steroids and a couple surgeries. She has better sight but will always be in glasses and has no depth perception but she lives on with little to no issues.

It is interesting to hear about world premature birth awareness day. The duration of a pregnancy is 40 weeks and a baby is thought viable if born after 24 weeks pregnancy. The later after 24 weeks pregnancy the better. It was lucky you hang on for another 15 weeks after you went into labor at 22 weeks pregnancy. Yes, all that bed rest was worth it. It was awful that your second daughter was born 2 months early. Your third pregnancy was very sad with you losing one of your twins. It was sad the remaining one was born 5 weeks early. It was very sad you had a still born baby. I am glad your last baby had no issues of prematurity. My disabled son spent 3 weeks in the special care baby unit with a lot of premature babies. He was full term but poorly due to his disability. The tiny babies looked so weak and dependent on the medical equipment. I liked seeing the stories of success by the units entrance. Some premature babies spent 6 months there and left weighing 9 pounds. Good luck to all premature babies.

Yes my nephew was a micro preemie born at the 23 week mark. He has his problems don't get me wrong but he is a happy (days away from being 6) 5 year old! He was big for his gestation but there was a tiny girl next to him in the NICU she was only 10 oz. when born! Less then a can of soda! She too is celebrating a birthday in a week!

Your story is very encouraging especially among those parents who may be going over the same problem. With current advancement of medical care facilities, a child born prematurely can survive and live a normal life. I just hope most parents would understand.
