Obeying traffic rules?

Philippines
November 18, 2012 5:53pm CST
There places that I noticed some drivers and motorist does not follow traffic rules. This happens when there are no authorities being seen in that place. However, if there are policemen or traffic enforcers, they are willing to obey traffic rules. For example, there are laready traffic lights in some roads at Metro Manila. Even the red is lit, some drivers tend to cross because they don't see any vehicles coming from the other way which in fact they can freely cross it. Furthermore, even in a "No overtaking area" where a solid line is painted on the road, many are still overtaking other vehicles. This happens when there are not enforcers around. Sometimes, such simple mistakes cause a great accident. How about you mylotters, do you obey traffic rules even there are no enforcers around? What can you can about such drivers?

Well I am not directly affected since I am not a driver myself. But it is true that some drivers do become reckless and violates some of the traffic rules. Most of the time they got scot free violating it because there are no traffic enforcers that monitors the road there. But there are times that it can indeed cause accidents because of that simple violations. Only then these drivers learn their lesson why they have to follow traffic rules.

It is unfortunate that others do not really learn their lesson by experience. That is a sad reality that everyone should accept.

I agree with you. I heard that there are some drivers that has been issued with a violation tickets many times for the same violation like overspeeding or reckless driving. In fact, they still manage to commit the same violation over and over again.

You are right, sometimes they need to experience the rsults of not abiding the rules before they will realize how important it is to follow such traffic rules. However, some forgets it too and will break rules again inspite what happened to them.

hi, here in my country there are many motorist who don't follow the rules especially in the evening and also without the presence of the traffic enforcer, they will drive their vehicle like there own the road, that is why it is important the presence of the enforcer so that road will be safe for the motorist.

I think it is still the drivers disciline while behind the wheels. I think following the traffic rules because there are someone eyeing on you is not a good attitude. Honesty must be thought to every driver that even there are no enforcers around, they should still follow the rules and regulation on the roads. Good day.

Hi asdomencil, I live in Virginia in the United States in the suburban area to our nations capital,Washington,DC. and the traffic here is very busy, especially during rush hour times.I find that mostly during these times the police don't pull drivers over too much because they are afraid of blocking up the traffic more. However they do pull people over, like you described, driver driving through a red light when no cars are coming, during the times when there is no traffic, like 4:00 AM for example. Right now I do not own a car,but when I do have access to a vehicle and do drive I am a careful driver and obey the laws most of the time, especially when it concerns pedestrians. In this state they have a law that a driver may turn right on a red light after they come to a full stop and if there are no pedestrians present. However,a lot of people just coast through the light and do not come to a complete stop. And if a pedestrian(like myself lately)is attempting to cross the street they continue to turn anyway and cut them off.Police officers do not pull them over, they ignore them if it is busy traffic at the time. I had a discussion on here about six months about drivers not giving the pedestrians the right of way and found that most people feel that the drivers have the right of way.

I think that in your country even there are no officers on roads there are cameras around that will monitor violators and eventually will receive their tickets via mail. I think obeying rules are still needed even you don't see and enforcer.

I hate drivers who don not follow traffic rules... they feel like they own the road... so many accidents could have been averted if only drivers would strictly follow rules... I learned how to drive in a place where the traffic police are very strict, so, i always use my seat belt and try to never ever brake a single traffic rule... i also instill in my kids the importance of wearing the seat belt and would never start the car if they refuse...

Soemtimes, I get annoyed too with such reckless drivers. In my case, when I started driving, I used to put my seatbelts too because it is needed at the NLEx. Now that I am assigned in different location, it feels something is missing when I don't wear my seatbelt. Sometimes, such small acts done frequently will make you do it routinely in daily basis saving yo ufrom untoward incidents.

I wonder why some Filipinos is so hard to discipline. They say too much about the government, politicians and other stuff, but they could not see themselves who has no discipline at all! and yes, very typical among the drivers to be beating the traffic light when there are no policemen around. They do not know the danger they are getting into. They just don't seem to care. What is a few seconds of stopping on a red light? Also those who cross the streets where pedestrians are not supposed to....Oh my! Terrible people. Some would even try hopping over fences on the islands along the wide streets and not bother to use the footbridge! What keeps the Philippines still behind all other countries is the lack of discipline among ourselves. If we do not learn how to do it, then I think even after 50 years, we will be stuck being one of the third world countries.

Yes, it only needs self discipline to obey the rules. Policemen and other enforcers are just there to monitor if the rule are being implemented properly and will cuaght violators. It is really in our hand for the successful implementation of the rules. You are right, foot bridges are being installed for safety however others are being lazy passing that since they need to walk far from their locations and will climb up to stairs just to pass the street. These are made for safety reasons and not to make you walk more. Like me, even the foot bridge is far from my starting point I used to take time to go there. Self-discipline is really needed in this matter.

we are not really use to obey laws which are not supervised. It can only be a rule to us when someone is on eye ready to reprimand us. We must practice obeying rules nor or we will never be.

You are right, most Filipinos obey the rule only if there are enforcers of the said rule. When they are on their back, many will break those rules. This has been a bad attitude of most Filipinos.

Rules in our country are breakable..well that is for some.. some filipinos tend to really break them because they know the law is lax... or can be mended for some ways. There so many of that kind of drivers here in my city and it is frustrating to even ride one!

I believe in you. Most of the rules and regulations here in our country are really breakable even there are enforcers around. I think the implementing body has come to do with this laxity.

In our country most of the rules are freely breakable by the Jeep and the buses. They can stop anytime, and go any direction anytime without signals. sudden stops and no proper lighting. One more thing if enforcers always break the law they make the people really don't feel the need to abide in them. Im not against the law, just saying that our traffic laws are really not in great shape now. If you get caught money can get you out of trouble.

Yes, most traffic rules are really breakable especially by those irresponsible drivers. Just like what you said, I observed it too that most jeepneys and buses stop at places they want to stop becuase they will load and/or unload passengers. However, sometimes, passengers are also responsible for such acts. Some passengers will wait for buses and jeepneys even they knew that the place it prohibited for loading passengers. I agree with you, bribery is always part of the problem. On the other hand, there are still enforcers that cannot be bribed by any amount.

I think the only instances when Filipino drivers obey traffic rules is when they are abroad. I have seen too many drivers (espcially pUJs) broke traffic rules like it was routine. I wasn't expecting anything else since some of them try to make excuses when they are apprehended. Don't get me started on the officers who don't do their duty.

I agree with you. Just for example in Subic that was previously run by American Authorities, traffic rules are really strictly implemented there. Many drivers are afraid to go there because of this reason. You mentioned abroad, do you think the driver of the tanker in the recent news in Saudi Arabia exhibits his recklessness there? Just asking because according to the witnesses, he really drives the truck fast because he is beating the banned time of trucks in that area.

As good citizen, I follow the rules. I don't want to be considered as law breaker. But some people do it, they simply don't have self-discipline. Good day!
• Philippines

I agree with you. Sometimes, it only takes a self-discipline to keep on abiding the rules and law even there are no enforcers around.

though I'm not a motorist and even don't drive as a citizen I always obey traffic rules. here in our city the most common traffic rules for non-motorist like me is the Jay walking rule. it is strictly implemented here because there are some cases that a person did not obey this and this person was taken to the traffic enforcer's office to pay for the fine of P200 or if you won't pay the amount you have to clean a designated area around the city. that's so awful and i don't want to experience that kind of situation that's why i always obey the traffic rules.

That is really an awful punishment. Furthermore, there is nothing wrong if you follow such rules. Hence it will really brings you to a safer way.

accident - Lots of road mishap and accidents are cause by lack of discipline and not obeying simple traffic rules.
There's a lot of drivers here in the Philippines that should not be driving at all. But because of some unscrupulous LTO personnel, undeserving drivers are given drivers license. Most of them doesn't know even simple traffic signs so how can you expect them to comply with traffic regulations. MMDA should be funded to put up and installed a CCTV on every traffic light in the Metropolis so as to maximize obedience from commuters and drivers alike, because they know they are being watched. Have a nice day. Ciao!

I agree with you. I just wonder how they got license from LTO. I think CCTV will be a great help. But they should also consider the resolution of the camera they are going to install.

Sad to say, that is one of the problems in our place. Hope the authorities will do something about it. We lack that thing "obeying traffic rules." Good day!

I think this is not only in your place in in every place here in our country. I think self-discipline has something to do with this one. Even a simple rule of your self is being violated.

I always obey traffic rules. Never did I pass on not obeying it. Because for me, with or without officers around, it doesn't matter. Because I always think of safety first. Safety for me, safety for the people with me and safety for people around me. I just don't understand others who doesn't abide by the rules of traffic.

Yes, we really need to think of our own and not just because we abide them. What really makes me wonder is that why they are keep on violating such rules which is for their own good. I admit, I am not perfect and sometimes, I violated those rules too for a good reason.
