Self Help books

Have you ever read a self help book? Did it help? I've mentioned before that I've been reading a lot of weird and wonderful things on my Kindle recently as I've been exploring the free books. Lots of these seem to be what I'd describe as 'self help' books. I've recently read books on relationships, positive thinking, treating yourself well, diet, meditation, and all sorts. Some of them have been quite catastrophically awful. I guess that's why they're free! So, if you've read one that you thought helpful, what was it and why was it good? If you haven't read self help books, why not? Are you perfect already?

Hi GreenMoo I am not that much into reading books on the computer and hence I have to buy them many a times which is quite an expensive thing these days (also, if you recall, I am not earning regularly due to my illness and being at home). But yes, I have a few PDFs which I have collected from my friends from here. Some of them are about my ailment - ulcerative colitis - this is a medical kind of book (though I had to use Internet many a times to understand many of their terminology). Then there has been "Staying Positive" which is about how to think and stay positive. These are the two books which have helped me know more about my chronic illness and also maintain a better state of mind as being all alone for months with illness starts taking its toll and playing on you. I would love to read about meditation and if any of your books has something like - how to meditate or what is the right way to meditate and you could share it, would be wonderful and helpful. I tried meditating earlier, but gave up as I could not understand if mine was the right way to do it or also, how beneficial was that.

Thesids, send me a PM with your personal email. I do have a meditation book you might find interesting.

I've only read one or two, but I didn't really believe in them prior, as well. I'm never gonna read other ones, I'd rather read some nice novels... if I read self-help books, that would be a waste of time. Most of the times they overgeneralize everything, and wanna make everyone the same. Especially the how to get a man ones (I've actually read excerpts - half tells you to be a doormat and ever-ready to do everything for the guy, and half tells you that you shouldn't give a damn and walk all over them... no golden means...)... oh, and how overgeneralized the Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus types...

A Five Step Plan to being Perfect in 5 Minutes a Day you mean Katsmeow? I know exactly what you mean! You do need to be selective with what you take away from these books, and some authors will work for you when others won't even when they have the same message.

Of course they are generalized as they can't possibly speak to each individual person. They aren't meant to describe your life to a T. You're supposed to use your critical thinking skills and decide what advice will work in your life, and what won't. As for Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, I thought that particular book was very good, very true, and a lesson we all need to learn. I think the reason people don't like books like that is because they're not ready to make the changes required. People these days want books that tell them they're perfect exactly as they are.. or some sort of magic fix to their problems.

I've gone through spurts where I like reading self-help books. I tend to go with the ones for thinking positive, relationship, de-stressing, and sometimes dieting. I've read a lot of Dr. Laura books.. I cannot even attempt to spell her last name! Not everyone likes her or agrees with her.. but personally I find the core of her message to be quite true. I even went so far as to read her book on religion.. she is Jewish. I couldn't quite go so far as to convert, but some things made a lot of sense. But her books on parenting and relationships are very good. The most recent I read was called Bad Childhood, Good Life. It hit home pretty well for me.

Positive thinking would be the ones I'd tend to pick up first. I really dislike parenting books, unless I've a specific problem I'm working on (potty training would be a good example, although I'm happy to say it's no longer necessary!).

Bad Childhood, Good Life is not a parenting book.. I just now realized the title makes it sound that way. It's actually a book to help those who HAVE HAD bad childhoods and as adults have issues because of it. The only parenting book I've ever read was also by Dr. Laura.. The 10 Stupid Things Parents Do to Mess Up Their Kids Lives. Dr. Laura promotes staying together for the children, and stay-at-home parents.. so that's what a lot of this book was about. That's why a lot of people don't agree with her, but if you knew her reasoning behind it you'd probably see that it makes a lot of sense.

Yes! I love reading self help books. I get to learn a lot of important things in life with them. What's more, I get to dissect the thinking of great and successful men. Such books keeps me motivated and taught me how to overcome life's challenges. I always encourage other people to read self help books too. I feel that I have grown mature while reading them. What self help books have you already read? Maybe you can mention some so I can add them up to my list of next reads.

I'm afraid I haven't read any recently which I'd want to recommend. Far from it in fact. Some of the ones I've read recently have been truly awful, but I suppose even just one new thing to think about is a step forward.

Then maybe you can tell me those awful books that you are saying. This will surely help me avoid buying them out.

My question is: what do you see as a self help book? A cooking book is one for example, so is a book to loose weight. So my answer is yes. I read a lot as well, also spoke to many people, but I don't believe in those so called self help books. Since they are seldom written for you as an individu and I already found out a long time ago that what is working for 1000 people is not necessary working for me. Also the fact a book does sell good or is read a lot doesn't mean that what is written in it works as well.

I've read some which have given me a lot to think about. Even just a new way to look at something. I've also read some truly dreadful ones (like the relationship one I read recently with it's tip to prevent your bloke from straying ...). Wakeupkitty, you make a good point that these books are not written for an individual. Their advice can only be general then, and it's up to us to adapt it to our personal situation.

I've read a great number of self-help books. I don't think they all related to my situations, but I could take bits and pieces from each book and apply it to my life to make positive changes. Then again, I've always been the type who wants to constantly better myself in whatever ways I can.

Yes, during my "low" times I read a lot of self help books. One of my favorite books is Living, loving and learning by Leo Buscaglia. This is really a self lifting book. Unforgettable also the book of M. Scotpeck, "The Roadless Travelled" and Hope for the flowers. (I hope I have the right authors). Of course who have missed the Chicken soup for the soul and all kinds of souls for this matter. If I become perfect? I could never ever be perfect, even if I have mastered these books by mind and heart. Because I still have a lot of scars on my legs as the result of too much playing on the ground outside the house. I still have scars on my upper arms (left and right) because of the immunization when I was young. If only they are not there reminding me that I am a person, I could feel that I am perfect. LOL.

I can state with absolute confidence that I am far from perfect, and despite my desire to be a better person I am unlikely to live long enough to even come close to it. Despite this, I have never considered self help books to be of any real value and would expect the bulk of the content to be rather abstract and generic. Somewhere deep in my memories I have a faint recollection of reading a book of this genre many years ago, although I can recollect nothing of the contents. I believe that I read it purely from curiosity with little interest in the actual content. Despite remembering very little about it I am quite sure that I was unimpressed by it, mainly because if I had found any interest in it then I should remember more detail.

Even though I am perfect already, I have read a few "self-help" books, just to see what they say... especially if they have a snappy title like The Game of Life and How to Play It (which, btw, doesn't give any hints, just examples of people's good fortune).

I was really disappointed with a book I read recently along the same lines. It just interviewed a bunch of people about their young lives when I was rather hoping for a step by step plan for how I too could be rich and fulfilled in just 5 minutes per day.

I've read self help books since I was a teenager and the onething I find is that a lot of people laugh. I used to be embarassed about reading them but then realized that I can't help anyone until I help myself. Most people have stacks of magazines with diet, exercise, cleaning and organizing articles among other things stacked around their house and to me, its the same thing but lots of little self help articles instead of one big book with lots of ideas in one place for one topic. To me, someone that reads regular books are looking for information, romance, mystery, history, etc if you think about it is all self help but some people won't admit it and disguise it and say its etertainment. I think its funny there are people that watch doctor oz or oprah and in a way, that's also self help but they are the same people that make fun of everyone else.

The Power of Positive thinking...and it was a very good book with alot of good advice....keeping positive does give you a different prespective of what's going on. It also helps fight depression when things don't go as planned....I have read others on relationships but some of them are plain stupid....some give a bit of good advice....but very few.

I've never read that one, although I've heard of it. Positive Thinking is probably the area I'm most interested in reading and learning more about. I really believe that thinking positively can help you to recognise opportunities and bring them into your life, but I'm not always very good at actually doing it.

Hiya GM, Have got two self help books by a certain someone and they are pdfs so they make it a bit difficult for me to read. I have to have a positive attitude when I am surrounded by people who do not believe in this kind of thing at all so sitting on here trying to read this kind of book makes it more difficult to concentrate as well. However I do go back to read them when I can and I learn something different every time. I don“t have a Kindle yet but really I prefer real books for the moment while they still exist that is lol.xxx

I started reading one of those free self help books a while back. it seemed sort of interesting but it felt more like a success story of the person they ere talking about. I got bored after the second chapter. If I need self help I just come here to MyLot. I always get boosted up here.

A lot of the free ebooks are self published I think, and you can sorta tell why they haven't been picked up by a mainstream publisher.

Yes you can. But some of those self help books have been around for a long time. I don't mind reading some of those free books. You never know, some of those unknown writers can be pretty good. I need to get to my library and see whats going on there. I think they opened it. It is brand new building with all the state of the art. And since i got an iPad I am going to go to the library right from the website and download books. Nice!!!

Reading self help books will help us to get more confidence and we come tonow about some good information by reading various books. I am not a great fan of reading this kind of books, but some times i will read some good books to spend my time usefully. Most of the time i will download ebooks from online sites to my ereader and read it whenever i need motivation. In this site we have lot of books in various categories and most of them are written by good writers which gives more peace of mind to us while reading. Also this site contains a good for the new readers to give more information about the self help books. Also some self help books contains the biography and autobiography of some popular persons, which help us to come to know about their real story and we will get more inspiration and motivation while reading their real stories. Most of us already know about our selves and our nature, but reading this kind of self help books will help us to know more about us, some books are dealing with different kind of human natures, characters, behaviors, attitudes and others. While reading this kind of books we will get more ideas about ourselves. Good to know that you are also interested in reading them

I hadn't included biographical books in the category of self help before, but they are able to give us inspiration sometimes.

Does reading a book by Dr. Phil count? I really don't read self help books because what might help some one might not help me. The only self help book I need/read is the bible.
@GreenMoo (11833)
21 Nov 12
I don't know who Dr Phil is! You're absolutely right about self help books not being designed for individuals, but I think you can be selective about what you take away from them. I never thought of the bible as being a self help book, but it must be the original one (and the world bestseller!).
