No Christmas lights, this year

Philippines

I did not take out our christmas lights from last year, anymore. After I put up the christmas tree and other decorations, that's it. Our electricity bill has been increasing each month, and I don't want it to shoot up even more for December. Maybe, just maybe, Ill have it up only for Christmas week, just for the kids to enjoy the twinkling lights. But, I'd take it out right after. And , no overnight. That's also for safety measures, because many houses get burned due to short circuits from christmas lights.

We talked about that with my daughter and we will put a set around the manger (no tree either this year) and that will be all. The kids will make the Holy Family in clay and I`ll take out a beautiful manger I have that my parents bought when I was a little girl. The only thing I asked was that the manger was set high so that my youngest granddaughter did not decide that she could play with it.

I love those old things full of memories of times gone by. I remember exactly the first Christmas with the manger and I even remember a couple of the most important presents I recieved that Christmas. It was very special for me because we went to the US for a year and a half and that was my one and only Christmas with snow.

Wow, I think the snow before was more fun, than it is now. I hear of many people getting sick and stuck in their houses due to heavy snow.

How cute, a manger from your childhood days. Good that it still survived till this date. I also have a santa claus stuff toy that my godmother gave me for christmas when i was still 4years old. I couldn't even remember that day anymore. But, its still up and cuddable and the kids love it.

I think we really have to do that jure, so we can always be within the budget. Christmas light could indeed increase your electricity consumption. So yes, maybe you can also put those Christmas light on the week of Christmas.

Correct jure. I am like you , practical. At this time of crisis we have to be practical and knowledgeable on how to make some strategies to cope up with the increasing prices of things we need .

Some things we used to do may have to be sacrificed. I've noticed most neighbors also don't put up too many lights thsi Christmas, or maybe not yet.

I would rather use the money to buy gifts or food, than spend more for those lights.

Hello Jureathome, that's a very wise decision you made my friend. No wonder, not much people are going to celebrate christmass in a long run this year end because of the rise of the electricity cost. Actually, in the US people set up christmass tree at the week or day before christmas and then removes it. well, as long as the family feels the spirit of giving and loving this xmas, that matters most

I think most probably alternative means of electricity like solar electricity and solar home system can be the solution for the rise of the cost of electricity. I think most probably candle lights can be used to decorate the walls.

Hi ajithal, thanks for your suggestion. However, solar panels are not very popular here in our country. Only factories and industrial plants use it. I think it's a big investment for residential use. Hi Letran, all these decorations boost the christmas feel at home. And, its also a fun thing for kids. But, I won't put up those lights anymore. Anyway, we don't stay in the living room a lot. And, we don't really expect visitors on Christmas day/

My family and I used to it out Christmas lights on the windows, on the lawn and even on the door. But now, we decided to just put up Christmas lights around our Christmas tree and that's it. No more lights that even plays music for the same reason: our electricity bill spikes up crazily.

I think most probably LED lights are cheaper and consumes less electricity.

We dont have many people who put up xmas lights here in Mexico. I really miss them. I put up a few in my cafe window is all. Most like you there, cant afford the light bill these days.

It's always better to be practical nowadays. Is everybody saving up on eletricity, over there? Or just not fond of lights?

In my country we put some lights around the Christmas tree, but no lights at all outside the houses, as I have seen in the United States. I`m glad people are starting to be more energy conscious although I must confess that the lighted houses look very beautiful.

Oh, here in the Philippines, they put lights wherever they can. There are even a few homes which realy purposely display lights for the neighborhood to view. And, on top of the lights, there are huge stars and moving doll Santas and reindeers.

we've taken down the lights around the roof a long time ago. i'm thinking of buying a new electric parol and give the old one to my brother for their house. i saw one that's plain white (capiz) with mary, jesus and joseph in the middle, then white lights around it. no red, green, etc. i think it like the simplicity and it might light up the garage much better. while i was washing the dishes after lunch today, i heard my mother talking to someone at the gate. it seems our electric meter was replaced. i do remember someone looking at it few days ago but didn't give me any feedback. to be honest, i don't see any unusual changes in our electric bill, but i will mark this date and see if there will be any effect next month or the month after.

Maybe that guy saw something unusual. Probably a leak, or something. Did you have to pay for the new meter?

Well, the meter guy sure did a noble job of suggesting the replacement. Others wouldn't be mindful of such. I even think there is something wrong with our meter.

i'm sure we didn't. a long time ago a guy was at the gate asking how many we are and what our usual consumption is. when i gave him the answers, he said it's too much. i never mentioned it to my mother then and didn't remember it that day.

I think you're being very practical. And really, just having lights up for the actual week of Christmas makes sense considering that it really is a one or two day Celebration. We just have lights on our tree, which our son can enjoy more easily because it is too cold for him to be outside a lot.

I may just put up the lights on the tree, too, on Christmas week, and take it out after Christmas day.

The Christmas decor that I have this year is the same as I had last year. Which was the figurines of Santa, and all other small knick knacks like plates. I did not bring out my Christmas tree because first, I literally live alone. And second, it is a pain to clean, especially here in our country where dust seems to accumulate faster. I have asthma and it will be a real pain to clean such a big tree, even if it is pretty. At least with the ceramics, I can easily wash them, then store them away for next year. And they also don't go out of season. As for Christmas lights, I also don't put up any.

You can sell the tree if you dont think you'd ever gonna use it in the near future. It'll just accumulate more dust if its left in the storage. I'm also using the same set of decors. I made sure I kept them well so they won't get distorted. I was so amazed with how good they look in the packs when I pulled them out from storage.

my mom said the same thing as you. she noticed that last December, her bill was ginormous due to her Christmas lights so she decided not to put any out this year. we typically don't put them out anyways but we do leave the tree on a lot. i have been after everyone this year to shut off lights, unplug stuff, etc because the cost of electricity seems to be going through the roof.

Electricity bills are really getting to us, even for Christmas. Oh well, I'd rather buy more ham and goodies than pay more for the lights.

Me too even last 2 christmas I did not put any lights here since there was an incident of fire because of some over heated christmas lights. We can celebrate even without thise light the important is the safety of our family.

I agree. There's much more to christmas than just those twinkling lights. But of course, if I can afford it, I wouldn't think twice about putting up as many decorations. Christmas only comes once a year.

I feel that there are a lot of people this year that will be thinking of all the bills rather than all the lights on and in their houses. I feel that with the expense of christmas, as well as all the other bills people will be spending a lot less where they can to ensure they have enough money for other things that they need rather than what they would like.

Hi juurea, I totally agree with you,,I have changed from that big tree and lots of lights a year ago,,I now just do a table top 3 feet white tree with lavander small balls and lavander garland and one strand of white blinking lights,,,thats it.. My youngest grandson is 13 so I just don;t even bother with a big tree anymore.. My family always have Christman at my house...Its just as festive...

Well, that's actually smart to do, thinking of the possible financial burden this coming Christmas and we don't want that in our head. That's very practical!

I think it would be a good idea to have candle lights lit in the house and the walls of the house if there is problem with the electricity. I think the candle lights will give good looks overall. I think it is good to put different colors of the candle light and may be you can have small led lights that does not consume a lot of electricity.
