The Game of Life, novel by Norma Howe published in 1989 when I was two years old. It is a weird and wonderful tale about a normal girl who is just trying to live a normal life in a less than normal family setting. Age old story, true enough but Ms. Howe depicts her perception of this mediocre lifestyle and paints a vast and vivid picture fit for the big screen. Norma Howe currently resides in Sacramento, CA with five grown children. She's published two other books being: God, the Universe and Hot Fudge Sundaes and 2nd book In with out crowd. Below, I will be disclosing the book's description straight from my private library!
"With a name like Cairo, she's destined to be a little different. But what excuse do the other people in her family have for being so... well, weird? Her mom's a bingo fanatic. Her dad's into collecting PKGs (that's patented kitchen gadgets). Her aunt Lucille has a serious eating problem. Her older sister, Heather, an astrology freak, is threatening to marry a violent environmentalist. These people need her help!
Sixteen-year-old Cairo feels as though she's the only one (besides her dog) with any sense at all -- until she meets a soul mate in the handsome and worldly-wise Rocky Nevin. They talk passionately about Vietnam, root beer, tennis, and the purpose of existence. Rocky's taking his time, but Cairo's certain he's worth the wait. Because as crazy as life is, things seem to have an even crazier way of working out." [Borzoi Sprinters]
The books has had quite a few reviews. It was described as being "a sparkling gem" by the School Library Journal. "An exceptional novel" by the San Francisco Chronicle and "So fab that I devoured it in one day! Check it out" by Sassy. It is definitely worth your time totalling to only 181 pages.
