why celebrate bonifacio day

first of all, I want to clarify that I have nothing against andres. in fact, i pretty much prefer him over rizal. but my question is, why do we celebrate his birthday? we do so with rizal. that’s understandable since he is considered our national hero. but it seems being a mere hero may not be an enough reason. because if so, why don’t we celebrate any other hero’s birthday and make it a national holiday. there are several others who led the revolution, and many others who fought against the colonizers. even aguinaldo who replaced him doesn’t earn a legislative act that would declare his birthday as a national holiday. so, does anybody known the reason/s? or maybe any theory may do. on a side note, i read that bonifacio wasn’t executed by spaniards, but rather by fellow katipuneros vying for leadership (a typical fate for effective leaders, I think).

Rizal came from a rich family, maybe even the upper elite among the Filipinos. Well-educated, having a medical degree and such. During those times, only a few families can even send their sons to school, let alone to study abroad. Bonifacio, on the other hand, purportedly came from the masses. The classic stereotype of a revolutionary hero, complete with his bolo. But when the decision on the choice of our national hero, Rizal won. The masses might not be able to relate to this. So maybe, in my opinion, that in order not to have some dissension of some sort, they also honored Bonifacio.

quite an answer, romzee. and i agree with you too, beamer. andres stopped attending formal school since he has to work to support his siblings, he is the eldest. at first he sold canes and fans which he made himself, then eventually held other jobs later on. what i can't understand is why is it that the americans were the ones choosing a national hero for us. part of a covert plan, i guess. just as they do with everything else.

Read what Wikipedia says about this... José Rizal is generally considered the National hero, but Bonifacio has been suggested as a more worthy candidate on the grounds of having started the Philippine Revolution. Teodoro Agoncillo notes that the Philippine national hero, unlike those of other countries, is not "the leader of its liberation forces". Renato Constantino writes that Rizal is a "United States-sponsored hero" who was promoted as the greatest Filipino hero during the American colonial period of the Philippines – after Aguinaldo lost the Philippine-American War. The United States promoted Rizal, who was taken to represent peaceful political advocacy, instead of more radical figures whose ideas could inspire resistance against American rule. Specifically, Rizal was selected over Bonifacio who was viewed as "too radical" and Apolinario Mabini who was "unregenerate."

wow. so that was how rizal was chosen? but the lawmakers felt guilty that they also declared a bonifacio day? why not change the national hero altogether, then?

I don't know either. Maybe I'll just read on to the answers of others. But I prefer to have all of the heroes' birthday a holiday. Sounds fun and more rest for me!

the important is that we remember their sacrifice for the freedom of our country, doesn't matter if it's his birthday or not. well, a holiday would suffice for him.

i like that too, adnileb. though for all the heroes that has been declared, we might not have any workday left all throughout the year. that is right letran. though i always thought that some who were considered as heroes really do not deserve the title. some were just declared as such as a form of propaganda.

Hello murkie, Haven't you read the history? it was Emilio Aguinaldo and his men who had him executed. After his great loss to the battle with the spanish because some nun expose his battle plan, he went to aguinaldo to ask for help. but during the voting for the leader of the revolutionary government, Bonifacio lost due to lack of people. then, he got killed and his wife gabriela silang raped..by bonifacio's men. it seems the government doesn't like telling the whole story and prefers to show siding with other heroes.

Well Gabriela Silang was not married to Andres Bonifacio, She was married to Diego Silang and I think this happened in Ilocos region. The official name of Andres' wife was Gregoria De Jesus (According to Wikipedia). Although there is certain Monica there but it was not clear who this person was.

Yeah, we may not really have to "celebrate" it but we should remind ourselves the glory that the heroes brought to our country. We should thank them for it. Murkie, I think you have forgotten that we have already Heroes day so Aguinaldo should have been part of it.

Their revolution not so perfect but it still something worth remembering. he saddest part is that, it took them literally three hundred years before we were able to revolt. that's how slow we are. I don't think it was glory but it was worth remembering, that once we created a revolution

yes i know that we have heroes day, and that is celebrated mainly for the wwII "heroes". but in case you haven't noticed, we have a "rizal day", and a "bonifacio day". we have a rizal day since he is the national hero. so my question is: why do we have a bonifacio day? why is there no aguinaldo day, or lapu-lapu day, or mabini day, or whoever-hero day?

I think the reason why we celebrate Bonifacio day is because Bonifacio is among the Filipino heroes who has the biggest role and impact to the Philippine history. Bonifacio is considered as the “Father of the Philippine Revolution”. He is the founder and “Supremo” of the independence movement against Spain, the Kataastaasan Kagalanggalang na Katipunan nang nga Anak ng Bayan (KKK), or simply known as the Katipunan. He is also a member of La Liga Filipina, just like Jose Rizal. La Liga is a movement to achieve reforms in the Philippines through peaceful means. When these efforts did not bear fruit, Bonifacio subsequently came to believe that independence could be achieved through an armed revolution, thus creating the Katipunan in 1892. So I think this said is the reason why we Filipinos have to do it every November 30.

you really made me think huh...actually I'm confused too 'coz it appears to be unfair for the other heroes who gave their lives for the country. But maybe by rank of accomplishments, popularity or anything else that's why his birthday is being celebrated. There are a lot of heroes but they did not accomplish as much as Bonifacio did. I'm not sure but his is what I'm thinking right now :)

Andres Bonifacio will always be an important figure in our history... even though he is not our national hero (he came close to becoming one)... we cannot disregard the fact that it was him who initiated the fight for freedom against the Spaniards... he is the Great Plebeian... and the perfect model for poor Filipinos who have nothing but can make something out of what they have...

I think he was the next contender for the title "National Hero" of our country so I guess leaders also want to recognize the efforts he did for our country. Bonifacio was a real freedom-fighter, fearless and very patriotic. He deserves to be remembered.

Every Philippine hero who fought for our freedom and the things we are enjoying now as a free nation should be honored, no matter how small or insignificant, what more for the "Supremo"?

hello louievill, what do you mean by what more for the supremo? i agree that everybody should be honored for their efforts. but are we really free? we have an independent government, maybe. but is there really a political freedom?

I think the reason why we celebrate Andres Bonifacio's birthday is a sign of honoring him. If I'm not mistaken few some people choice Bonifacio over Rizal as a national hero but Rizal won due to some of the reasons. In order to be fair enough they celebrated the birthday of both good heroes or let me say prominent hero in our country.

yes, that may be true. but why not extend the same "honor" to lapu-lapu or to all other heroes. they gave their best in their own way in the name of independence. and i think it would be kind of unfair if we are to judge them that they gave less efforts than bonifacio or rizal did.

It is because Bonifacio is one of our heroes. And his courage to fight for our country is admirable. Thanks for this. Have a nice day!

If being a hero is a mere basis for it, then how come we do not have the national holidays for all other heroes? Anyway, thanks for the response. Have a nice day as well.
