Hi friends, i am new comer from china. I want to improve ma english skills so that i can communicate with people freely. But , i suffer three major problems : First ,although i am able to read daily english ,it's difficult to me to show my views what i really want to express. I think I know 5,000 normal words approximately ,well, the fact is that when i want to write something , i get lost ,i do not know how to start it. Second , i failed to understand the conversation content if they say too fast as well as with the accent. Third, I find the english grammar confuse me ,you know ,the different english tenses ,how to use the verb , the structure of a sentence and so on . I am extremly interested in english , i hope i will have good performance when talking with foreign friends ,at the same time , we can know different cultures as well as make new friends ,wonderful! So friends ,need your help and instructions , thanks a lot in advance!

English grammar is not hard compared to other languages and it is easy to find things to read in English - even some lessons on the internet. You do not need to worry about gender since our nouns are not divided into male/female and neuter. If you understand 5,000 words you should be able to write something readable. Conversation is hard in any language and Enlish pronunciation is hardest of all, so be patient about getting this right. Listening is the only way to learn how to pronounce things and even if you get it wrong in conversation no-one minds, people like to correct mistakes. Bear in mind that English people are very bad at learning languages themselves and admire anyone who learns to speak theirs even if they make lots of mistakes.

It's a truth that my pronunciation is a big problem, once i thought my pronunciation is good enough, but it's turned out i was wrong ,even the siri of iphone 4s can not recognize my words. I have been practicing pronunciation for three months ,as you know ,I made progress .I failed to say five or more words a time ,it's just seemed like I out of breath and forced me spell sentences or words quickly ,and I am still unable to figure it out. Perhaps , I need follow your instrutions be more patient and do not care making mistakes too much in conversation. You said people like to correct mistakes ,which inspire me extremely , i will cheer up !

Count me as one IIdrwin, i am not also fluent in english though i know some of the common words but sometimes i hardly express what is really on my mind because i tend to forgot it.It is really hard to practice coz you will not only try to memorize the words but also to have a correct grammar is also a problem. Having a tutor can help but i guess it will cost too much.

Yeah ,you are right , I tried to attend the english training course a month ago ,but I can not afford it ,it's too expensive. My job time is flexible ,so I have a lot of time to do what I am interested in .I want to learn english by my own in next half a year ,if it has no effectivity , I will choose the training school .

yeah i can not agree with you any more ,vocabulary is basic part of English ,person view ,we'd better remember the vocabulary in a certain situation ,such as reading a book ,watching movies ,enjoying music and so on. By the way ,your English is pretty good ,in a sense ,your writing skills is better than me.

We all have our freedom to express here regardless of some complexity on English words. You can simply express your thoughts with simple English as long as people would understand what you are explaining. Furthermore, you can always use the internet as your learning reference so that when you are trying to write or participate in discussion you are able to help yourself on some English vocabularies.

Agree with you on the internet ,which help me a lot on English vocabularies. When I started a discussion or a conversation ,I made this matter too complexity to know what I should do . May be i should take some time to study English countries talking rules so that I can find a common way to communicate.

As others have said, it takes practice, practice, practice. Grammar is important, but I think we need to understand its purpose. When we naturally learn to speak our native language, nobody tells us the rules. We don't wait to learn the rules before we can speak. We hear others and then repeat what's said. When we get encouragement, we repeat it again. That's how we learn the association between a spoken word and a thing. We aren't showed pictures of our mom and then told, "This is mom." Mom talks to us. She calls herself mom. We hear her use that word often. We repeat it. She gets excited. We do it again and get the same response. We learn by saying that sound that the person we like responds happily. Then we start using the word everytime we see her. Soon the connection is made in our mind between the spoken word and the object. We might learn, through a process similar to above, that a food we really like to eat is called spaghetti. When we want the food, we say the word. Even if we can't or don't say the word properly, we're communicating our meaning. Something happens as a result of what we say. As we continue to speak, we experiment with our language. Some gets a response from others, some doesn't. As humans, we like to get a response. The things that get a response are repeated. This is how we learn "proper" language. All along the way, we're listening to others who can speak the language much better than we can. Our experiments are attempts to sound more like them. No where has anyone told us rules yet. The longer we listen to others and experiment with the language ourselves, the better we become. It's not until we're already speaking, reading, and writing the language that we begin to learn about the rules. The rules of grammar just help us improve from where we are, it doesn't teach us the language. So I guess what I'm saying is, it's fine to learn the grammar rules, but you need to be speaking and writing and reading on your own too. Then you can learn the rules to apply to your own work. Grammar is dry and boring if all you do is look at something presented to you and apply the rules. Grammar is about using generalized rules to apply to your everyday language.

Hi ,my friend ,thank you for explaining to me the real truth about language learning,it seems like that I completely forget my purpose to learn English. Language skills should apply in reality life ,dealing with affairs as well as communicating with people, then it can accelerate the learning parts. As you said ,the main problem I faced is that spoken English and Listening .You know, actually i listening to the recording of english conversation everyday ,which has been almost last for six months. While I make little progress, the reason is that I never summrize the method. Consider that I am not have the suitable opportunity for praticing spoken , I trying to read after the tutor in the teaching video. But i find I failed to repeat it in the right way ,I mean when I read a sentence or a phase of the book ,it sounds strange , especially the pronunciation.

hi, english language is not hard to learn as long as you know the basics such as the use of "a" and "an" for vowels and consonants.first you need to focus on SUBJECT-VERB agreement in order to find the correct grammar usage. basically if the subject is plural, then the verb must also be plural form or vise versa. this is just the basics. i hope it can help you.

Welcome to myLot. I guess you can practice your writing here in myLot. When it comes to your listening skill, I guess you have to listen to them intently. If they are fast, maybe you can ask them politely to slow down. When it comes to grammar, you have to study grammar rules and don't try to break them. Each tense has its uses. You have to study them one by one. Try to master each. Here's a link for you: http://faculty.ksu.edu.sa/emana/Pages/VerbTensesChart.aspx Hope my response helps you. Happy mylotting.

Hi, Nice to meet you here, friend. I'm Chinese, too. And I can see that your English is good. In fact, you don't need mind so much about the Grammar. When children were young, they don't know grammar, but they can speak their mother language well. SO I think if we want to speak English well, we must listen as much as possible, if we listen more, we can speak better. As to me, I often watch English movies, it's good for my listening, I watch it again and again, and try to remember the words in the film, then I try to speak, it's a little difficult for us, as we don't have the environment to speak English, maybe you can go to an English corner to practice your English. When I was at college, I did it. When we say "listening, speaking , reading and writing", I think we say it in a proper way, listening comes before speaking, speaking comes before reading, reading comes before writing. So, we should listen first, then with the time passes by, we can speak. Then , we can read well, writing is the last thing we can do well. Have a nice day, my friend.

Hi,it's a surprise to meet you here ,my friend, welcome to mylot. As the grammar you mentioned ,it should not be a barrier for talking with people ,I think I just need make courage to speak english. you said :we don't have the environment to speak english .you got the point,it is almost no opportunity to speak english in our daily life. My University has many foreign teachers and students ,well,I didn't catch the chance to communicate with them ,what a pity! I often watch english movies ,too, but it seems does not work,I appreciated the story itself while forget their conversations.May be you set an example for me , i shall recite those movies one more times ,and remember some useful sentences as well as expressions. When it comes the writing ,in my opinion ,MYLOT is a good stage for me to pratice writing ,I can get a lot of help here. Although english learning is hard for those whose mother language is not english ,what's more, it's a long journey ,I will keep going ! Hi ,my friend ,thanks for your advice and encouragement.

I am really sorry to hear about your problem.I understand,Learning English is not an Easy task for non English speaker and also if your grammar structure is different from the standard English.I doubt if in your place your school use English as a medium of Instruction. There are best ways to improve your English skills.First, you must Enroll in an English Class like online class. It's a trend nowadays.Second You must read and practice grammar books.Third, You must watch English movies.Cheers

there must be some foreigh teachers in your school. Try to speak to them. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, you know what making mistakes can make you get more progress. do not care about grammar when you talk to someone in English. Language is for communication. Besides, reading English novel is the good way to improve your writing skills. There are real English expresssions, copy down when you think sentences are good and recite them if you have a good memory. By the way, I am Chinese and I am English major.
