India is to play its third test match against England which is scheduled to be started from 5th of December 2012 at Calcutta. In this Cricket test series so far two matches were played and each team managed to win a match each thus remaining at an even level. The Indian Captain was not happy with the pitch prepared at Motera stadium Gujarat though India won he match there. He wanted to have a pitch which will turn the ball from the day one, so that toss will have no effect on the out come. He wanted the pitch to be prepared at Calcutta in similar fashion so that the home team will get advantage over the guest team. He feels that this common thing being practiced all over the World and we also should adopt this procedure to have advantage to the home team. However the chief curator of Calcutta pitch Mr.Prabir Mukherjee feels that doing some thing like this is nothing but would amount to tampering of the itch and he is not interested to make Calcutta pitch as a ‘Kotla’ pitch which faced closure for International Cricket for one year following erratic behavior of the ball during a match few years back. It seems while BCCI and CAB were discussing about this issue the chief Curator wasn’t taken into confidence and because of this 83 years old curator Mr. Prabir Mukherjee has taken leave for 30 days from 01st of December 2012 on health grounds. It is not sure if Mr.Mukherjee is really sick or he is presenting his protest against the Captain Dhoni and CAB by going on leave for 30 day! In the past also Mr. Mukerjee had differences with different Indian Captains regarding this issue, where he was reluctant to change the pitch conditions. Looking at the above issue, I have got few questions in my mind which I am sure my friends here will answer. In a sport if a pitch is made congenial for home town what is the point is inviting guest teams to play? Are they invited to face humiliation of loosing the match? Is this not against the spirit of game? Is this not a sort of cheating in the sport? I think the International Cricket Board has to lay out some rules about the pitch also, so that people will not prepare pitches favoring them! What you feel? Kindly respond and oblige!

Hello Rao ji, I have some other questions for you. Does it mean that Dhoni lost confidence in his individual ability and his team? Does he think that if the pitch is favourable for the home team (for his team) the team will win for sure? Does he think that if the pitch is good (favourable) then his team can win automatically without giving any efforts? I felt pity for the young captain if he thinks this way? It is cheating the host country is making the pitch favoring for their team. It is applicable for the world and no one should follow it. Else there is no point on making cricket matches. Finally I don’t have trust with any cricket team, it is all about scams

I think Dhoni is loosing his confidence and by doing this he made a bad impression to the Indian cricket...

ya, should`nt have asked for a turning pitch. recently dravid also said that it would be more like a lottery than a cricket game. and team batting 4th will have to simply surrender.

Well about Mr.Prabir Mukherjee ,he is yet another egoistic man who has the habit of picking up problems out of nowhere and he has done this yet again.I am not here to defend Dhoni or anyone but the real issue is of sporting wickets.India has been almost invincible at home as they have lost just two tests in last 5 years and just one series in last decade. The strategy has always been to play on dust bowls with hardly anything in it for bowlers, pile up lots of runs and then choke the opposition with slow spin and variations.Hence like you mentioned that pitches being made favorable for home team is not correct, yes its wrong to make pitches like that ,but that's what India curators have bee doing from so long.So called batting dust-bowls are highly in favor of Indian team and demoralizing for opposition. Dhoni wants rank turners which has something in it for both bowlers and batsman, and believe me any vising team would prefer rank turners than those usual batting paradises in India simple because if a pitch has something in it for bowlers then bowlers of visiting teams too have good chance to do well.A sporting wicket is the one where bowler and batsman both have equal chances,it does not matter if track has swing or spin.Wicket in Mumbai was just like that.Indian team has been playing on flat wickets for so long now, hence they struggle badly when they tour.Mr Mukherjee and certain sections of media have misunderstood Dhoni ,he just wants sporting wickets which can provide some challenge.Indian spinners have bad habit of bowling slowly with sidearm action without stressing the body too much, that may get wickets like that on slow dust-bowls but on a good track they will struggle and that is what happened in Mumbai ,something similar is the case with Indian batsman too, they too are not comfortable against moving ball whether is spin or swing. This is transition phase in Indian cricket when many legends have retired,if we have to be like old Indian teams who have done well in Eng and Aus, then its mandatory that we should play on sporting tracks.Making rank turners is not cheating as Eng, Aus, SA,NZ make green tops to help their teams, making dust bowls which Indian curators make is cheating actually as that kills the chances of visiting teams completely. With rank turners visting teams have good chance if they play well ,just like Eng did in Mumbai.

thatis the right decision made by prabir mukherjee right now and its a completely contrasting thing to do and this is the right thing to do and we must never ever make requests, inspite follow and play by the rules of the game and also ideally for sure ,this is the time to play all the time

I think some kind of ego with childish adamant nature is working in Dohni. When England spinners have already proved that they are equal or more performing than Indian spinners relying only on spin favoured pitches may bring more problems. Indian cricket team has some good records at Calcutta based on big runs scored by Indian batsmen. Dhoni should recognize Indian batting power. By giving more priority to spinning pitches that batting force may collapse against England spinners.

hey, To be honest, I really liked your topic. Grounds are better known by their actuality not by changing it day to day or according to the captain's wish. For example, Perth is known for its fastest pitch in the world, Mohali is also known for fastest pitch which helps the bowlers. Yeah, sometime pitch characteristics may change because of rolling or weather conditions, but let the pitch remain and be curated of what it is known for. I mean I never heard a captain say, make this kind of pitch. Just why don't you leave it to the curators and provide a sporting pitch? A player is considered a great player in a whole if he can adapt himself to any type of conditions, yeah sometimes it not easy to adapt quickly to the conditions when you travel to other countries, but that's the way Cricket should be played. I do hope India wins, but Dhoni should show more agressivenss in the fields rather than asking for spinning or bouncy wickets.

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well yes u are definitely correct, i think players should play on all types of pitches and demanding a particular type of pitch would be against the spirit of the sport. I think Dhoni wants to win the third match dearly but then he cannot ask a curator to lay a particular type of pitch that would suit the requirements of the Indian team only, even the English team have to play on that pitch also. Its high time that ICC interferes in this matter and give a proper judgement. What say?
