Tips

For two months working as a front desk clerk at a hotel i was actually quite surprised that people will tip a front desk clerk. Wonderful surprise for me. I saved all my tips by sticking them in a Teddy Bear Piggy Bank. When i took a different fulltime job 2 weeks ago i took my tips out and counted them. There was 102.59 Quite a nice addition to my wage. I used the money to put on my credit card to pay off 97 dollars i spent on christmas shopping online. If you earn or did earn tips....What would you do with tips earned? How long do you save them?

i never mix tips with my salary cash, what i decide to do is spend the tip as soon as i get it,at times i accumulate for a week then go do shopping for groceries,if its so much i buy utensils i have wanted to buy or anything that i have been yearning to buy but couldn't do so with my salary,at times i just treat myself to buying luxury food items and treating my family to a good dinner.the best tips i enjoy is during the Christmas season,i once got so much money that i was able to do half my gift shopping with the money.

That makes sense. I mixed my tips in with change i had through out the week.

Wasn't aware of this practice neither. Those people are nice, and I'm sure you're very appreciative. I don't work in a service industry where one gets tips, but if I did, they'll definitely go into savings after I've paid off debts.

Oh, for sure. Forgot to mention - do you have a TFSA? It's better than a regular savings account. I think banks even offer higher interest rates on this.

I found it nice to have a bit of extra unexpected money at the end of the month

Well done on collecting the tips, hope you spent them wisely. When I had a saturday job all the tips went into a tip box and at christmas/easter etc they would get counted out and the money went towards buying our boss and under boss a gift! Plus we also had ot chip it with some money as well. Most unfair.

that is so wonderful and you must be so happy. If I was young and doing a job that gave me tips then I would get out of any debt and then live on my salary and save the tips. It is a good feeling to have a little nest egg tucked away for use in later life - like a deposit on an apartment etc. Save your money and be independant. Good luck and may you earn many more tips. It is certainly an incentive for yhou to be the best employee

To be honest....I've left the Frontt desk position (pt casual now til the end of december) and have moved on to a job that pays 7 dollars an hour more than the previous as well offers health benefits, paid vacation, a sick day a month and other staff benefits throughout the year (massages, christmas party, bonuses etc)

Massages...? Now, that's one nice employment benefit to have. I've never had that kind of benefit throughout my 30+ years of working. Does your new job involve heavy physical activities or something?

That's really great. It helped you in a way. I could not contribute much to your discussion as I don't have tips at my work.

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well i am happy to know that u have always used the tips given to u in a proper way that speaks about your dedication to your work and your thoughts about the importance of money in one's life. I think u have done a great job of saving those tips due to which u are able to pay off the credit card debts and i think there is lot to learn from u in this regard. Had i been in your place then u would have also done savings initially till i felt that this amount is sufficient to pay off my debts and loans. What say?

I've made mistakes in the past in regards to credit card debt...however i've learnt and am hugely on my way towards having it fixed. i had a chat the other day with a bank manager and learned some other interesting things about credit ratings and how to improve mine.

That's cool! I would love to work in a hotel too. Actually one of the course intend to take in college was a Hotel and Restaurant Management, but since I'm a little petite person I was not able to pass the height requirements and took up Business Administration instead. If I'm only taller I have pursue that dream job and is probably getting good tips as well. Anyway, I'm happy for you! :)

I am jealous to hear your story. I am a receptionist of a company. never got a tip from the guests, but my salary increased three times. That means my boss approved my hardwork. as a front line employee, everyday i should have a service attitude to everyone. have a nice!
