Night shift welcomes me back

Yes sir! After a year and a half I have been put on the night shift again . I really don't like this shift because I have issues sleeping during the day. But, what can I do, I have preferably a lot of things in mind for me to do during the day so I chose to work on night shift again. I am afraid if I could stand this for a week how much more for a month. My shift has started almost 2 hours ago but I already felt sleepy . Caffeine intake is not good for me so I will surely be having a hard time concentrating when midnight strikes (which will be 2 more hours from now). Any ideas how to awaken my mind till the next 7 hours? Could you share your experiences on being on the night shift?

May I know what you wanted to do in day time? You wrote that you wanted to do many things in day time so opt for the night shift. Does it mean that you don’t want to sleep at all? Sleep is every necessary for your brain and body to work actively. If you do something in day time and go for work in night that means you don’t get time to sleep enough then you cannot survive for sure. At least 7 hours sleep is very necessary for your body. There is much difference on sleeping in day time and night time. If you work in night shift I think you need more sleeping time to get out of the hang over of sleep. So my suggestion is, you have to forget some of your works you plan to do in day time and use this time for sleeping. If you sleep well you can do your work efficiently. Sleep is important to keep you health. Lack sleep causes many disorders including weaken you immune system. So my request is to you consider your sleep is as precious and find enough time to sleep in day time. There is no alternative for sleeping.

Oh, I get at least 7-8 hours of sleep even now that I am working on the night shift. I slept 7 hours today which is already good for me. The thing I will be doing during the day is I wish to study. The class will not start until 3pm so I still have ample of time to rest in the morning. And by the way, my duty starts at 8pm and ends 5am the following day. Thanks for your concern

I'm not really sure what's the most effective way of having your body adjust to working on a night shift. Unless you find some way of sleeping during the day, you'll have a hard time staying awake during your shift. What I did was I sort of simulated nighttime when I got home in the morning. I mean, I kept my room really dark by changing the blinds into drapes, and also turned the AC on so that it would be cooler. I even played soft music since this helps me sleep. After a couple of days, I've noticed that I was not that sleepy during my shift. A few more days after and I've adjusted rather well working the night shift.

I have worked on the night shift before but it was not a whole month thingy, so I really still have days that I sleep well. But, this time it's gonna be a permanent thing so I will really try my best to sleep during the day even for a few hours. I will try changing our light curtains to those darker and thicker ones maybe that will work for me. Not sure with the AC, I can't afford a high electricity bill . Thanks for sharing

You do not have any other option but to sleep during day time, as much as you could. If you feel sleepy during your duty hours, you could walk few steps. Alternatively, you could go to washroom and splash your eyes with cold water. You could also try some deep breathing exercises when you feel sleepy. All the best.

I haven't experienced having night shifts. I guess you only have to get sufficient sleep before your shift. You might have difficulty coping up with your new schedule at first but I guess you can do it. Many people also have night shifts nowadays and after a week or two, they were able to adjust. I hope you'll be able to adjust quickly. Goodluck!

Yes, you got it! Mind set. You have to think that you can do it. If others can, why can't you. Right? Goodluck. Eat a balanced diet and have enough sleep. Don't forget to take your vitamins.

I hope it goes the same with me. I know it is all in the mind so I am really thinking right now that I can really make it and I could cope up easily. Mind set sometimes is a great factor when changes happen in ones life.

Yeah, night shift is really horrible. I also worked in night shifts many times and it is also not good for health. I can share some of the tips that I use to follow. 1. Listen some good songs which won't make u sleep. 2. Don't concentrate too much on your work which will make u tired. 3. Have a walk for sometime. 4. Sleep well before coming to office. 5. Be active in mylot....:)

hello gaiza12.......I can understand how you feel. I would go crazy if I would not get to sleep in the night....one may try to sleep during the day time, but still I think enjoyment of sleep is made for nights... You have no choice as this is your job, so try to do something interesting which can keep you busy so that time passes quickly.......Also I have a feeling that within few days, you will get use to new conditions and will start enjoying your work. Just take things easy and you will be fine. Best of luck.

Exactly! I agree with your, sleeping is indeed best enjoyed during the night. I was lucky to have a cold weather today that was why I was able to sleep soundly earlier. But, with our mostly tropical weather, I am not sure in the coming days if it will still be the same.

I used to work night shift and it lasted for two years. I was even pregnant during that time, I'm glad I was not sickly and my baby is really healthy. Now my my schedule is mid shift, from 4 in the afternoon until 1 in the morning. I always thought I prefer morning shift but this one is definitely working at best for me. Allows me to play and take care of my son daily plus let me do some household chores, also we can still run in the market in the morning at times. I hope you get used to your new schedule. It is hard to concentrate on work if you are really sleepy. Try listening to up beat music while working. Also if you have an office mate beside you, try to talk to him / her a lot if he / she doesn't mind it.

Sad to say my office mates are busy with their own work so I can't talk with them, they might not want to be bothered. Anyway, I tried listening to music but it didn't work. I am trying to watch comedy shows right now and somewhat it is working. You are right, one of the reasons why I chose night shift is I also have time to do things in the afternoon after I sleep in the morning, if ever I could sleep. Maybe in time, I will be used to this and be able to do a normal life even if I work on the night.

I used to work night shift and Like it a great deal. As would get off and do shopping and start wash eat breakfast then clean a little then off to bed I would go. My room was dark and I would sleep. I even lost weight as I ate right. So Then I went back to morning shift and I hated it. I hated getting up early. staying up late no problem. Have a great day

I prefer waking up early to work than staying up late. I'm a morning person. I work on a night shift before for 2 months and also lost weight. I am worried that will happen now that I am working again on the night shift.

I don't have issues when it comes to being a night shift. Before I became I Supervisor, I was actually once a Financial Analyst for a night shift a couple of years ago. But it did not give me so much problem. Just bear in mind that you needed the job in order to survive and that you have to take it and be happy on it.

I actually don't like night shift, as what I have mentioned above. And I too love to sleep. I just think that taking this shift is the best for me now. I have to try at least. I just hope I will not feel sleepy the entire shift.

We do talk with some of my colleagues but because we are in front of the computer we are usually busy with watching movies or doing other stuff online especially when we are not that busy at work. I don't like to take naps because when I wake up I usually get headache.

Going back to night shift so suddenly might need some adjustments on your part. However, you will soon get used to that because it may take time for others to adjust since by this, it is altering one's body clock. good night shifting.

Sometimes if I was sleepy at work, I would get up and move around. I would make sure I had a hot shower or a hot bath and a warm cup of milk before going to sleep. I would do things such as play quiet, relaxing music to make sure I sleep when I needed to sleep.

Yes, I might start loving milk now if I really want to sleep in the morning. I will try the hot bath if it will help. But, sometimes I prefer not taking a bath so I won't feel awake and still feel my body tired so I could get enough sleep.

I am not a fan of tea . Maybe I try to drink one but for sure I won't even take in 1/4 of it. I'll try to sleep as much as I can in the morning, if I can though! Thanks.

Our boss tried to put me on the night shift before, that was my first year here and I really decided to resign because I know I will not make it. They gave me a chance and put me on the afternoon shift instead. But not, they need more people on the night shift, I said to myself I have to try because if not I will be forced to look for a new job. It's hard to look for a job these days so I think I have to try. I too hope this turns out well.
