This crazy work schedule has my sleep schedule messed up

Last week I went into work at 6am one day and 9 pm the next 2 nights. Then I worked at 7pm the rest of the week. Yesterday I went in at 6am, today at 5am, and tomorrow I don't go in till 5pm. My body has no idea when to sleep right now. Next week I start my paid training for my job that starts next month so my days will be filled. Training from 9am-4pm, then work from 5-whenever. I am going to be so tried by the time I get home I will just pass out I think. Do you work rotating shifts? Does it make it hard for you to know when to sleep or be able to sleep when the time comes?

This schedule would mess me up big time - I just couldn't do it. However, I do have a suggestion that has worked for several years for me. This is that I wear a sleep mask if I sleep during the day. It is a habit now and I have about four of them on my bedside table. Just a thought that if yu have to sleep in the day then this may help. It is going to be so hard on you lilybug. Have you got help to look after the children? I worry about how you will manage. Blessings

I don't have trouble sleeping when the sun is shining really. It is the finding time during the day that is the most troublesome. My 12 year old watches my 5 year old while I am at work. There are a few days where my sister stayed or my mother stayed when I had to go in really early and it was a school day because my son leaves for school before my daughter and she needed someone here with her. Other than that it usually works out.

I used to work shifts, for most of my life I was a telephone operator that covered a 24 hour shift, we never closed, they did however have different shift patterns, earlies, mediums, lates, so you could do 6-2, 9-5, 12-8, 4-12 etc, I used to go for the early shifts but they mucked up my body clock and so I switched to lates, as the changeover I had to get used to getting up at 4am in the morning to start the 6am shift, to the lates which were getting when people were coming home from their day's work if that makes sense. Plus working lates I got more unsocial pay. Looking back now I am amazed how I managed to get up at 4am in the morning especially in the winter months. Providing you stick to the same shift pattern your body will get used to it eventually, but when you have to change so much like you do then your body doesn't know what to do!

yes we do work in shifts and we experienced the kind of changing you do have right now. i suggest you take it at this time and tell your boss what it leads. tell him you get sick, you're being late the next day or you've passed out. talk him of the health issues.

No I've never done that.. but my husband has. When he worked Home Depot they'd have him out at 11pm one night and in at 5 or 6 the next morning. I threw a fit, it should be illegal for them to do such things. If you're going to work a late shift you should go in later the next day so you get your rest. I made him quit that job because the hours were too ridiculous. So from there he went to managing a Pizza Hut where he'd come home around 1am and have to be back the next morning at like 9 or 10. His job now he works 8am till 9pm most days. He's never really had good hours.

Oh how I would love a job with set hours. I have had them in the past and I liked them so much better. It is nice to know when you have to go to work all the time instead of trying to remember what the schedule is this week.

Luckily, I donot work rotating shifts , but my boyfriend does. Sometimes, from 8am to 4pm, sometimes from 4pm to 1am, somemes from 1am to 8am. It really makes him hard to sleep since today he will sleep in daytime and tomorrow will be at night. distressful. Moreover, rotaing shifts are not good for health and can get old soon.

I am not used to going to bed early and getting up early, so the first night I couldn't fall asleep and ended up going to work with NO sleep at all.

It is crazy to have such a lousy schedule prepared by your manager. Of course you are going to have your sleep mess up in this way, it is not worth working for a job like this, you are putting your own health at risk for the sake of this company. May be you want to think it over whether it is worthwhile to continue working for them if the manager refuse to have a reasonable work schedule ready for you, i will not stay longer than necessary if i am in your position, unless there is no other work available in your area and you are desperately in need of such a lousy job to keep you alive or the company is paying you enough for a doctor visit in case you are sick due to this mess up schedule system your manager has for you. If it make you pass out and so tire every time you came back from work, then it is a job that is not worth keeping, try to find another job quickly so that you can quit sooner than later, it is not good to work rotating shift in this way, it is a nightmare for you.

Hi lilybug! I remember when I was younger and I was working in a fast food chain. I have to wait for the one on the next shift before I could go home. It so happened frequently that my co worker will be not able to come during that day so I have to take her shift. Although I was still young at that time and I can still bear it even I don't have enough sleep. But I don't think I could still do it now. Maybe you could try to find other job while it is still early. Have a nice day!

If your health is not permitting you may go for a job change. Sleeping is important & lack of sleep invited several health hazards. You can go for jobs where shifts are weekly rotational..health is wealth, hence we need to take care.

Don't know why some places of work have their employees on what I call: crazy work hours. I worked at retail and each day, it was a different set of work hours. My work schedule for the week was like this: Mon. 8am - 2pm, Tues. 10am - 3pm, Wed. 4pm - 9:30pm, Thurs. 8am - 3pm, Fri. 6pm - 11pm, Sat. 11:30am - 3:30pm, Sun. 11am - 5:30pm. Every day, it was different - crazy! So, I have to look for work that doesn't have a crazy manager and such crazy hours. Good luck to you.
