What things do you do when you can sleep because your mind is still thinking?

I have been having problems with this lately. When it's time that I should be getting some sleep I can't seem to go to sleep. My mind continues to think about all that is going on and how I should deal with it. Even though I know that is the time I need to be getting rest.

This happens all the time for me. The best way I have found to combat it and get some rest is to think of something that is not important, but able to occupy your mind. For example, you could count something by 6s, try to think of all of the people you saw today/this week/etc., think of the all of the words inside the word "daydream", etc. The worst thing you can do is actually think about the sleep you are missing or your responsibilities for the next day. It is hard to relax with all of that anxiety that is sure to build.

I will definitely have to try those out. I have been having a hard time sleeping for the last week. I hope that things will get better. I really do need the rest but so much is going on right now that I think that my mind is on overload. So I will try your suggestions because I'm sure that I will have a hard time falling asleep tonight.

Watching TV helps me a lot. I get involved in the plot and that takes my mind away from parto of myproblems. I turn off the light and place the "sleep" devise. Usually the first commercial makes me sleep.

If you put the TV very low, they will not awaken, I think. The other way is to read a book.

I should try that sometime. It may help me go to sleep.I haven't done that in awhile though because I'm afraid of waking my family up. Hopefully though I will be able to come up with something that will help me to get to sleep.

Hi Dominique25, I had forgotten I couldn't take espresso few hours before bedtime. This happened again when I was on my vacation abroad. I never realized this and ordered a cup of hot espresso and a berry pie together with my friend in a coffee shop. Yeah, the moment I got the aromatic smell of the coffee brewing there I couldn't help and made the order straight away I really enjoy the coffee aroma as well as its great taste but I suffered the whole night long tossing and turning on the bed until the wee hours around 4 o'clock I can't fall asleep as well if feeling too excited even if I'm really tired or exhausted. Keeping our mind busy with thinking like your situation can't let us fall asleep as well. It's better to leave the bed and have a cup of lukewarm milk to calm down our mind and this usually would help me to fall asleep then. I couldn't prepare myself the milk while facing insomnia in the hotel room at that time mentioned above, shrug. Certainly I will if this happens to be at home. Happy posting

Yeah that would have been hard. I know what you mean though about resisting certain things when out. It can be hard for me to do this when we are traveling. As there are so many different places that we can eat at get drinks when traveling. But I suffer from motion sickness and eating drinking while on road trips makes it awful. The last trip though that we went on I made sure I had some motion sickness tools, and some medicine. It helped a great deal. I was able to eat and drink what I wanted and I didn't get sick. It turned out to be a great trip. I will keep working on relaxing when it's time to sleep. I hope that some method will begin to work.

Yes, I have also had my share of things like these for sometime. It used to be those worst nights that my mind knew that I should sleep tight and never wake up till the alarm rings, but the same mind will be racing from one thought to the other thought never letting me to sleep. This sort of thing when it happened to me like continuously because I had some personal problems to deal with earlier took me to an almost depressed state and all I could do was cry. I have even read somewhere that when a person doesn't get enough sleep, he/she tends to become weak emotionally and tends to cry for silly things too. How I overcame this? I made real hard work. I strained myself the most i can so that my mind also gets tired to think about anything at all for that matter. I did take a few sleeping pills at times when my mind never gave up on racing between the thoughts. But I made sure that I should find a permanent solution rather just taking the sleeping pills. I did some meditation and I spent a lot of time with god. It really helped me more than I would have ever imagined.

I had a hard time falling asleep again today. I have felt the same away about how your mind is continously racing. I would agree with what you have read. I can see how that can happen. I'm glad that you have found successful ways to help you sleep.

I also experience that once in awhile. When there are things or issues that I have in mind the whole day, it haunts me until bed time. I would give myself 5-10 more minutes to fall asleep and if I still can't I would get up and do something else, like go online, play a game or something like that to tire my mind and deviate from what's bothering me.

Yeah I should work on that. When I can't sleep I should try and get other things done around the house until I'm feeling tired and I can try to sleep again. Hopefully soon I will be able to find something that will help me sleep when I need too.

Yeah it would be a good thing for me to try and remember funny things. Mylot is a great way to get ready for bed. After all there are so many things that we can write and post about that we are bound to eventually get tired.

I think when you go to sleep as much as possible, you should just try to keep your mind off things such as what is bothering you. It would also help you whan you would retire to bed when you are really tired already so you won't have those times or period that you will have to just lie in there and think.

I agree with you it is a good idea to try not to think about what is bothering us and to go to sleep when we are really tired. I think I should also try to do something that calms me down to help me sleep. Hopefully soon I will be able to have a good routine of things to do to help me sleep.

Lately ir happens to me almost all the time. It occurs because of lots of problems and stress we pass. As for me, I go to sleep at night and wake up around 2-3 in the morning. I stay awake for about 2 hours till I manage to get asleep again. Many of these nights I just get up and sit in front of the computer, or pick up a book and read. Couldn't do anything else like watching TV, or cooking, or cleaning up the house, if not I would wake up the whole house. Some say one must empty his mind and try getting some sleep. If I could...

Yeah it can be really frustrating when we can't sleep. I agree with you it is hard to clean up the house when others are sleeping. Sometimes I try to just at least take out the trash that way I know I was able to get something done around the house while I'm up late.
