Penpals and snail mail...

Pen for writing snail mail - I don't like writing letters

I have a friend who is a bit older than me who moved out of the building and to another state this past summer. She started writing to me since she doesn't have a pc and can only use snail mail. She is a very busy woman and always was taking classes for different things and volunteering. It was like that even when she was here. We used to go to parties they had in the building and we both volunteered to set it up and clean up when it was over. I'm not big on writing letters and never was but I get 2 or 3 short letters from her every week. Usually saying the same things. I try to get a note out to her at least once a week. So far she is the only one who has sent me a Christmas card...but then it's early. I haven't had a penpal since I was a teenager and they made us get one when I was in high school. Do you have a penpal and use snail mail to communicate with him/her? Is writing letters something you like to do?

I don't have penpals too. But its a kind of surprise to hear about penpals and writing letters through snail mail these days when internet and email have almost killed letter writing habit even as a hobby...

Well, there are many people without computer but it takes great heart to continue letter writing to a friend especially through snail mail when people are becoming so lazy and feel underdeveloped to use snail mail.

Believe it or not she doesn't have a computer! I don't see her ever getting one so we will continue to write to each other no matter how long it takes to get there.

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well that is great to hear that u have a pen friend and i know u are not an avid writer but still u should try your level best to reply to her so that the contact stays intact. I know u must be missing her so much as u guys were bonding big time before and were organizing parties together. It is obvious to get nostalgic and try to stay in touch with her. Very honestly, i have never written letters to any one and hence i have no pen friend. What say?

yes very rarely we find such friends that too these days. when people are busy with their life and have no time for others. you should continue to write.

I plan to keep on writing to her since I'm not nearly as busy as she always is. I don't know where she gets the time to write!

i hate this because letters take so much time to travel and my friends will feel really irriated and annoyed to receive it and the time constraint is higher here

My friend realizes that the mail takes long especially during the holidays when people are mailing out Christmas cards. We never say anything that's so important it can't wait a few days.

Hi! I never had a penpal. I wish i could but since the invention of new technologies like cellphone, email, etc. there's no room for penpals here. At least MyLot gives us the chance similarly like PenPals-if we consider, posts and replies as letters.. Cool, isn't it? What if mylot changes template of posts to resemble that of like a letter? It may be nice but then i guess, the importance of discussions will low down, maybe?

I myself do not have a pen pal but I think it would be really cool to have one. I have an ex in prison who wanted me to write him but I am not trying to rekindle old flames so I decided it was best not to. But when I was younger I too had a pen pal in school and I also wrote to my cousin i never knew in prison. My grandpa gave him my address because I was close to where he was being held. I thought it was a great experience and now I see him at all the family reunions. I think snail mail is exciting and I like the excitement of waiting for that letter to come into the mail. I even signed up to be a pen pal for some of the soldiers in Iraq but since I wouldn't send a care package right away before I got the address they wouldn't give me anyone to write, which I think is bull crap! But anyways definitely keep in touch with your friend.

I once had a pen pal in Iraq but he came home and I never heard from him again. I think he might have been married and did't tell me. I have cousins I used to write to until email got started so now we email and don't write and it's sad.

Yeah it seems technology has really taken over things that kept our mind at work. When we wrote snail mail it made our spelling vocabulary more advanced! But now we have things like spell check, that even college students use in modern and advanced English classes which is just sad! But yes it would be nice if our world could just slow down a bit and see all the things we are taken for granted and blocking our improvements for ourselves.

I cannot even remember when was the last time i had used pen to paper and sent it as a letter, the last paper i had sent seemed so long ago that i cannot remember what i wrote and where i sent it to , i have been using e mailing since they were introduced almost seemed to be so long ago ,1st account was with hotmail and have not looked back since then, i just remembered i used to love writing letters tofriends and penpals when i was very young in my school days and it was a bit exciting eaiting for that response that i know will be arriving soon but not sure when so had to constantly checking on the letter box, looking back it was fun in a way to have that feeling but I guess the IT age has has done away with that and instant communication is the norm now. think i am going to go back to writing letters and posting it just for the fun of it , or greeting cards will be a great way to start, it feels more personal instead of digital words,

Yes, I have penpal, but my problem is, I am so lazy to write. I just want to type. Sometimes, the time to go to the Post office. It is still nice to receive mails however. arrgh.. I can't write anymore, if it is not on the board or the white board. my penmanship really sucks. LOL
