I just finished reading the 50 Shades of Grey novel by E. L. James. This reminds me of some Filipino Pocket Books. I used to read a lot of these way back in high school. My personal favorite is Martha Cecilia, who is the author of the Kristine Series. Her novel mostly revolves around a very rich and insensitive guy who will later on fall in love with the girl character. Yes it sounds simple but the authors are really good. They were able to create a very exciting love story and you will seldom find a boring moment. Have you read a Filipino Romance Pocket book? Do you think Filipino authors are as good as the international ones?

I'm not a big romance fan and obviously there aren't a lot of outlets for Filipino books in Texas.

I went from horse books to science fiction. I have read some romances, but they aren't my favorite genre...

Hi ElicBxn! I was a big fan of romance stories. When I say 'was', that was back in hig school about 10 years ago. Filipino pocket books are exciting, fast paced and short. Its concise and no boring moments I guess.

Before the advent of filipino pocket books, I used to read the Mills & Boons, Harlequin Romance and others. I also used to read filipino pocket books when it became a trend. Now that we already have the e-books, I very seldom read them. Our authors are also as good as those foreign authors.

Perosnally, I am a fan of Harlequin books although they are a little costly (but it depends where you bought them). I love the imagery that the authors use. Anyway, I think I graduated from Filipino pocketbooks to harlequin and otehr intentional pocketbooks.

Hi pahak627! The last time I read a Filipino pocket book was about three years ago. I used to read a lot of these books when I was in high school. But now, I read online books instead. Yes I believe Filipino authors are as great as the foreign ones. Hi jeanneyvonne! I think I also graduated from the Filipino pcoket books already. But to notice that a best seller story is almost similar with the story that Filipno authors created are really great. I think the Filipino authors are really good as you can also feel the emotions of the characters in their story.

You know, I've never read 50 Shades of Grey and I've also never read any of the pocketbooks that you are talking about either. But just from reading this discussion, I get the impression that both of these are very similar to the Harlequin romances that I will still read from time to time. That said, I have to say that I'm not really sure that 50 Shades of Grey would really be a boo that I'd be interested in, despite the fact that it is wildly popular.

Hi iluvusabado! I still have some Precious Hearts Romance Pocket books. These books still looks brand new as I preserve them. I stopped reading these books when I was in college. I started reading Dan Brown books afterwards and Epic novels like Lord of the Rings. Hi rog0322! While reading 50 shades of Greay, it also makes me wonder if the author really experienced it. The description is very detailed. Anyway, I do not concentrate on the mature scenes of this novel. What I love about this is the love story and the characters.

I am a fan of Martha Cecilia really. I am a collector of her books since I was 15... I have a collection of Kristine Series too... Actually, I am really a reader. I read novels as I read encyclopedia too and other stuff... I am not a person who will discriminate filipino writers because of favoring foreign but I admit I will never waste my time reading some stupid story whether it is made by filipino or foreign novelist.

Hi mhaiXCs10s! I have a lot of Kristine Series collections too. I started this when I was in high school. I even sent about twenty of them abroad to my Aunt for her to read it on her past time. I just received it back recently. My mom is always teasing me that my pocket has already traveled overseas unlike me. =)

I have read one tagalog pocket book in high school and I did not read again. I guess I'm more of a Dan Brown and Stephen King kind of books. Filipinos are really good and I think that they can be as good as the international ones. Maybe they should promote it more for people to buy the books and read them. Although, I rarely see teens reading nowadays. They're more indulged on techie stuff and social media.

Hi greenthumb018! I definitely agree with you. You will seldom see a teenager reading a Filipino pocketbook. Instead they are more into Twilight and Facebook. And not to mention high technology gadget as well. For me, Filipino authors as good as international authors as well. I am more into Dan Brown novels recently as well.

I am not really a fan of Filipino pocket books but I have had a glimpse of the works of Martha Cecilia , as well as those of Eve Montelibano's. I think that they do have that excellent way of expressing themselves through their works. I am amazed at how some of them could work almost similar quality as that of their American counterparts.

Hi jenny1015! I think they also get their ideas from some International love story books. But they have changed it completely to be suitable to Filipino readers. Their novels are for young and old. My grand mother has a lot of these pocket books. I think she has boxes of it.

I have to say that I read them too alongside some foreign books and novels. Personally, I prefer the novels and sometimes foreign authors because I get really hooked and sometimes their story line are more complex, complicated and less predictable. However, I have my own have share my Filipino pocket books even though they share the same romantic and general plot. I don’t know but I once got hooked on pocketbooks centering on brides. I really can’t compare the two types of authors. When it comes to quality and substance, I have to pick the foreign authors, the characters are memorable and so is the plot. I get really intrigued by the plot summary (on the book) and sometimes I find more. Filipino pocket books storyline is pretty much short and straight – usually how a couple get back into loving each other.

Hi jeanneyvonne! Some Filipino pocket books are about simple love stories. But there are some that involves a lot of complexity and a very good plot. Kristine Series is one of them. It is a love story that is full of actions and adventures as well. And you will seldom find these plot in other Filipino pocket book.
