As if there were not already enough problems facing our fragile economy, with the fiscal cliff fast approaching, now the GOP is vowing a heck of a fight over increasing the debt ceiling next year. According to a CNN article (see link below) if Obama fails to lower spending, debt, and the deficit they will not raise the debt ceiling. This will further risk lowering our already decreased credit rating. Opinions? How can the GOP get out of the mess they have gotten themselves into? Can they save and rebuild their faltering party? http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/11/politics/fiscal-cliff/index.html%3Firef=obinsite

Perhaps the problem lies with the Democrats NOT being serious over cutting spending? In the past the GOP has voted for raising taxes, and the debt ceiling with the promise (made by Democrats) of future spending cuts that NEVER took place. No, this is not the fault of the GOP alone, the Democrats have just as much blame to bear as they do. Our debt is covered by revenue coming in. There need be no default on it because we do take in enough to pay on it. It is discrecionary spending that needs to be focused on, something Democrats are loath to do.

True. Unless they get serious about cutting spending things will get worse but I doubt they will. With Obama's re-election they see it as free reign to do whatever they want no matter the cost.

They basically do this every year, it's not new to either party. They'll wait till the last day to pass a budget while half of America gets worked into a frenzy about social security checks not going out and what happens if we stop paying the military. In the mean time the entire country is going to go down the drain because the 2 parties are so busy battling each other neither can concede anything that might better the situation. If you all are worried about Greece, just ask yourself how many Greek protesters do you think were working and making a comfortable living. Probably very few, so the more people that are employed and can afford a descent living the fewer people there are to do other less desirable things.

They do do it about once a year, which is precisely why we are in the mess we are in. Raised to pay off debt, but used to incur more spending.

If they would change their message--pull out the REAL numbers, for food stamps, for unemployment, for spending--4.8 billion a day since the fiscal year began in October--if they would learn to use social media effectively--they might get somewhere. But the GOP doesn't want to stoop to the propaganda that works, to protect their people. Everything the democrats say can be spun against them, quite well actually. But the GOP just doesn't know how to speak to the ignorant (and by ignorant I do not mean stupid, I mean uninformed/misinformed). Democrats do. Of course all of this will forever be Bush's fault, anyway
