My son and d/i/l say they will not let my grandson who is 9 months old watch Sesame Street. My son watched it for many years when he was young and I don't know if she ever did. I know my son enjoyed it and learned a lot of things from it like numbers, alphabet and songs. I really don't get it. I think he's going to be seeing kids with Sesame Stree character toys and wonder who they are and why he doesn't have one. Really, what's wrong with Sesame Street? Do you think it's a good or bad thing for kids? He's already addicted to tv and I can't put it on when he's here because no matter what's on he will watch it and not pay any attention to me.

A child of that age should not be watching television. Period. I never saw the show as a child and, by some miracle, I managed to learn my letters and numbers. I even managed to learn a few things beyond my ABC's and 123's. There is nothing wrong with Sesame Street in itself, but it certainly should not be used as a substitute for reading to a child, buying a child books and encouraging creative play. Children do not need to be hooked on screens; it is unhealthy for them--discouraging both creativity and activity. If more children spent less time parked on their behinds in front of screens, there would be fewer obese children.

I don't think kids need to constantly in front of a tv but the tv time they do get should be on something fun and educational. I totally agree about tv and obese kids..

The American Academy of Pediatrics discourages television viewing by children under the age of two. I wish that more parents and others within children's lives abided by that. Passively watching is not going to have any actual educational value. If a child can engage in a conversation about what she or he has watched--even a basic conversation (i.e., "Big Bird got his name, because he's so big!")--that is where the educational value may be found. That is not happening until approximately two-years of age or so.

I think PBS's Sesame Street is perfectly alright for any kid to watch. It's an educational program as you have pointed out. I grew up on Sesame Street and hey I still like it today. I will turn it on for the little guy that I watch while he is playing with his toys. My older kids liked Sesame Street, especially my oldest daughter. She's super bright in cognitive skills. My other kids enjoyed shows like Mr. Rogers, and Barney. PBS is much better than watching a whole morning of cartoons on Saturday. If you can put education into something where the kids will get something out of it then it's okay. You don't want to take away the hands on learning though. Kids need to learn through watching and doing (whatever medium they learn with the best). Your grandson is 9 months old, so try some one on one activities that he might enjoy so he can interact with you like blowing bubbles. You can buy them or make them really cheap. Give him some bold colors to play with, toys or rattles that are red or black and have unique designs.

My kids were never big fans of Mr. Rogers and Barney wasn't even known when they were small. I do have things here to keep my grandson busy and interacting with me. I just have to make sure my tv is off.

Our tv is off much of the time. There is no tv at bedtime when little ones should be sleeping.

Did they give a reason as to why they didn't want their son watching Sesame Street? I can't see anything wrong with it myself and I used to love watching it, especially Big Bird and Kermit the Frog, it is aimed at children after all, and even adults will sit down and watch it. I haven't seen it for years and didn't realize it was still going. It's educational too, with the Count and numbers. There are plenty of television programs that are appalling when it comes to entertaining kids and I would rate Sesame Street as one of the best programs.

Hi ctryhnny, Sesame Street are really good. I make my daughter watch it and before she entered kindergarten she can read and sing many children songs and can speak good english too. She's even ahead from other kids in reading and socialising. Go ahead any kind of knowledge is good
