Why Aren't Food-Pyramids More-Specific about WHY You Need the Different Foods?

You know the old one, it only included 'the number of servings it takes to build that part of the pyramid.' The new one--more a 'colored plate' than a 'pyramid'--just gives you an idea of "how much of a plate to fill with each type of food." Maybe I don't need 'the standard diet,' but how would I know unless the pyramid-design tells me what I might need each food for?

well, call my cynical, but I think the government figures either people won't care, or they won't understand it. The chart USED to say, years ago, what each group meant and give a short explanation of the benefits of the food group--but now, like most things, it's becoming an icon chart. Does it even have WORDS on it anymore, by the way? I have noticed that a lot of things don't I bought some sort of gadget last month--don't remember what now--and the instructions were all pictures, no words. The new windows 8 is a lot more icon oriented as well. A symptom of an illiterate society, perhaps. I don't know if they even teach that stuff in school anymore, but if they don't I wouldn't be surprised. Displeased--because nutrition is important--but not surprised.

It's up to us literate ones to encourage others to-be literate and -encourage others-to be literate and -on and on ... a Literation Nation!

Good Luck . I went through the drive through at Mc Donald's earlier--and the directions for cooking and assembling the burgers over the new grill area were all photos--no words. And some Chinese guy wrote a best selling book--all in icons, would you believe. I was a little chagrined to realize I was having trouble "reading" it--but I'm sure 90% of teenagers could read it. Just another sign of the times, I guess.

I feel completly represented by your words, chrystalia. It has taken me a long time to learn to use some new gadgets because it seems that I was supposed to have a prior knowledge which was not in words. I have to wait for my grandchildren so that they can help me figure it out.

Seems to me that they've got something to hide! I reckon the standard food pyramid, for a very long time now, has been used to promote the livestock - dairy - egg industries & it's these industries that fund it in return. There has been whole reports & even books written on this stuff, so I won't go into it now. I like the five food groups of the vegan pyramid better. Much more trustworthy in my opinion. I wonder if there's a pyramid for raw-fooders out yet? Maybe funded by the local fruit shop???
