The Right Thing to Do...

So I went to get my hair cut this morning. I know that they make below minimum wage like a lot of jobs around and count on tips to make up the difference. The young lady did NOT do a bad job on my hair, but she did not cut it like I told her too. It is not bad and my hair is so short it really won't matter at all... but should I have given her a tip or not? It's important to do what the customers asks, isn't it?

I am really uncomfortable with the tipping culture in the USA each time that I go there. As it is not something that we do here in Australia, we often forgot to tip good service and felt uncomfortable feeling obliged to tip ordinary service that was not outstanding. I would never tip bad service, but would probably not tip average service either. So in your case, I would not have tipped. So what did you do? Did you tip or not?

I have a preset amount that I pay for my haircut and this includes a little extra. I know that places like that can get by without paying minimum wage since the workers can accept tips. I gave her a $20 which was a little more than a dollar over the cost. I think the prices went up since I was there last time too!

I feel that a customer should always leave any establishment satisfied with either their products or services. But sometimes, if I am not satisfied with the work, I do not give tips, too. Do I feel bad about not giving? At that time no. But when I reach home, I feel sorry for the person coz I know that she has somehow did the best that she can.

I usually try to tip at least a little bit. Part of being a servant is to do it with a good attitude and properly. But I also understand that there may be lots of difficult situations in someone's life that makes it difficult to go to work each day. Maybe they had to leave their child home sick because they needed the money. We never know!

I agree with you! We do not know each of their stories. And I guess we just give them enough to reciprocate the kind of service that they have provided to us.

I would have still tipped her. I mean if she had done a good job I would have tipped her more, but I still tip no matter what. Darn it, even when they're mean I tip. My mama beat politeness in me!

I usually give a tip no matter what. Even if I am eating out (which really does not EVER happen anymore) and a server is mean or ugly - I figure I have no idea what they may have gone through to get to work that day. Perhaps their parent or child is ill, or they just found out they have a disease or something like that.. maybe they are working hard to get their electricity back on.. we really do not know what a person is going through!

I feel like you did the right thing..they did increase prices, and it is Xmas times...everyones' money is a little scarce which is probably why they increased prices.

I think that is right, it seems like everyone is having to really watch their money a little closer. I know I am having to be more careful about how I spend mine! That's why I am going to find another place to cut my hair.

You only cut your hair one time a year? I keep mine very short so that i do not have to mess with it. I cut mine about every to 8 weeks! I need to learn how to cut it myself and save the money!

I tend to tip hairdressers all the time, even if they don't do exactly as I asked. However, sometimes it's my fault because I'm usually not very clear about what I want. They have never messed up my hair too much. I do that for myself! Also, as an afterthought, if you return to the same hairdresser all the time, you may want to tip, just so they don't take their annoyance out on your hair! :)

I typically set an amount I am willing to pay for a haircut. For a long time, it was $15. But now that the cost has gone up I guess it'll have to be $20. That way I include a tip and don't have to worry about it. It would have to be really bad for me to not give a tip! I will try to go on Tuesday next time so I can have the regular girl that usually cuts my hair and does the better job!

i am a horrible person because i never leave a tip for my hairdresser. i go to one of those chains and i go there about every 6 to 8 weeks and i figure that they are probably not making bad money (here in Canada, minimum wage is over $10 and by law they have at least make that. i think it is important to listen to the customer and sounds like she didn't really do that, so i think you did all right.

I left a very small tip! The haircut price had increased to $18.95 USD and I left a $20. Not much but still a dollar more than she had. I will not pay more than $20 for a haircut. I am going to start looking for a cheaper place!

As long as the person does a decent job, I would tip. Of course, with hair cuts, you have plenty of opportunity to get the person to fix any issue with the haircut before you leave the chair. So, there is some responsibility resting with the customer to speak up at that time. If the person really did a horrible job even after you instructed her or him on how to fix it more to your liking or was terribly rude, you would be justified in not leaving a tip.

Oh I have left a tip when I was not happy with the haircut. Then I get home and I'm aggravated with my hairdo and then upset with myself for giving a tip because now they think I liked what they did to my hair and I really didn't. If you didn't leave a tip you really did the right thing because they didn't do what you asked of them and you weren't 100% happy I'm sure.

I think she should have said something like, "are you sure you want it that short?" instead of just not making it that short. She could also look on the computer to see how I have had it cut the last few times! I am not really "unhappy" with it - it's just that I noticed she didn't do it like I asked.

One thing I have always learned is to watch how the person is doing my hair and make sure they are doing it right and not the way they want it. But I never have tipped a hairstylist, because I pay for the services and doesn't that go to them anyway. Sometimes I pay so much, I don't have enough left over to give to them. But if you still felt that she did a good job, although it was not the way that you wanted it, then it was good that you gave her an extra tip.

It is Christmas season and she is underpaid, so forgive her mistake and pay her as a your heavenly father does. Most of the time we are blessed, even though we do not obey him in his instruction. We are annoyed when others refuse us,but Jesus is merciful and he heeds us when we repentant.Give her the tip,but tell her gently that she should cut according to your liking.

I gave her a small tip - it probably would have been bigger if the price hadn't been more than it ever has been. Evidently they went up on their prices since my last haircut. I really only had so much cash so I just left it with her.

It is my understanding that tips given to those in the service industry are for doing a good job. They are paid a wage for their work and the tip is an added bonus for service that you appreciate. I don't tip for a bad haircut and I don't tip for poor wait(er) service. I occasionally eat out with a friend of mine who drinks ice tea like a camel. I mean he drinks up to five or six glasses during the meal and at least two or three during dessert. This means that the wait staff is almost at the table non-stop. He tips a BIG tip if the glass is filled and kept filled. When he has to repeatedly ask for the tea he still tips but a whole lot less. I worked as a waitress and I had to provide excellent service to get my tips. I look for reasons to tip a service provider so they will usually have to be really bad before I don't leave a tip.

It would have to be really bad before I did not leave a tip at all someplace. I do agree that a "tip" is designed to be in addition to what they are making because they are doing an exceptional job. The tip should not be just because - it should be based on their service.

I want to ask if your new hair style is satisfactory.Sometimes,I went to the barbershop with a sense of knowing what hair style I needed. But usually the hair dresser would defy my idea and gave me some advice about my hair.Having seen how confident he is,I could not help following his advice. And finally it was a proper hair style. Therefore,if your hair style also looks bettter than what you have expected, you should consider to give the dresser some tips.Ok,good day.

It is okay - it's a little longer than what they leave it. I think that's what she was thinking that she was going to get it too short. But that's not possible with me! I had another girl mess it up real bad one time by not asking questions like, "are you sure this is what you want?" That solves the whole problem really! lol

I think since she did a good job and did work on it that you should have given her a tip but you should have also said something. Feedback is very important for hairdressers and people in similar professions and then if you go back to the same person, next time they will know. But as you said, tips are important to them as well and since you said the haircut looks good I would give a tip, just not as good of one.

The haircut is fine, just not as short as usual. That's fine - because I keep it very short anyway! No one but me will know the difference. I'll just have to get it cut sooner next time to keep it short and manageable. I gave the same 20 I always do - but since the price increased she didn't get as much.
