Someone posted this picture on my FB wall. My first reaction was 'how cute!!'. Then my practical side made me react differently. Is this ok? What do you think?

Well, it looks cute because the rat looks nice in this picture. There are rats that look dirty and ugly. But, no I won't do this if ever I saw one :p

I don't kill rats, we don't have mice at home (so no chance of killing one) :)

Neither would I. But I always ask this question. Why do we have to kill pests specially when they look so cute!

I thought it was cute too. Someone else is doing it though. I am not sure I am getting that close. I am not afraid of them but I am not anxious to be in close proximity either.

My thought goes out to the need to eradicate such pests while looking at this image it hardly feels justified. Why are we put to such difficult tasks is a question that cannot be answered.

HI, Good pic and the animal is also reacting. At least the human is so kind and did not do anything cruel to the little one.

But you are forgetting viju that we are supposed to eradicate pests. I know this animal is responding and is not scared of this person but do you think this should be encouraged? I am an animal lover but at the same time I have a responsibility that expects me to see that there are no pests around!

Is this really true?. Mouse being feed and not running away?.

My question too! This rat has full confidence in this human being - very strange, unless it has been adopted as a pet. Anything is possible!

Oh..it's cute in picture but in reality, I might ran miles away.. the picture is just ok but if the next picture of this will show the person drinking the same bottle he gave to that mouse, that will be disgusting. Makes me thinking about it.

I don't think he will drink from the same bottle but one never knows - anything is possible. I have never come across anyone with this kind of interest in my life. We must thank Internet for exposing us to weird situations. I too am scared of rats and I don 't think I will feed them ever. We are supposed to eradicate them.

It's actually a young brown rat, not a mouse (the tail is not hairy and the animal is too big to be a mouse). It's clearly a wild animal and not a pet. Rats are normally considered a pest. They spread disease and do damage to property and it is appropriate to control them around human habitation, not to encourage them. That doesn't mean, of course, that they are not 'cute' and very intelligent animals which can actually make entertaining pets. (On the whole, I'd rather keep a rat as a pet than a cockroach). Because they breed and mature quickly, are intelligent and have some similarities to humans with regard to certain diseases, they are also very useful to science. Both as pets and as laboratory animals they are well controlled. However, as wild animals it is best not to encourage them as appears to be done here.

The wise owl is at work as usual! What is interesting is that this animal is not scared and is responding. We humans are placed in odd situations specially those like me who have feelings for animals pests or otherwise. But at the same time we need to eradicate pests no matter how cute they are a task not many would want to perform!

I think that if one would want to post on our walls, they should have the courtesy of asking us if it is okay. Otherwise, it is rude.

This person who posted it is very close to me and so I do not mind that. And he knows that I am an animal lover but let him not get ideas that I will go for a rat or a mouse.I am an environmentalist too and I have to sadly work hard to do away with these pests. I sometimes wonder why human beings have been given this cruel task.
