Would tougher Gun Control have prevented a tragedy?

It seems that the gun is responsible for all killings. If we had tougher gun control we would not have any more tragedies. I would like to ask what would have happened if we had stronger mental health commitment laws. Chicago and Washington DC have some of the toughest gun control laws in the nation and are among the highest crime and murder rate in the nation. Where is the outrage of the Mayors over the murder rate in their city?
Connecticut had a chance earlier to pass an enhanced Mental Health Law. It was defeated because it would infringe on the rights of the Mentally Ill. A friend of mine told me that when he tried to get a person committed who had threatened to kill people he was told that the easiest way would be to get the person to agree that he needs help and would voluntarily commit himself to treatment, the only danger was that he could also check himself out of treatment and could not be forced to stay in treatment. My friend was advised to take the person to court and get guardianship then he would be the one making the decisions. In other words you would be asking an irrational person to make a rational decision.
Now we are being asked to respect the rights of irrational or Mentally Ill people by denying the rights of the law abiding citizens by further restricting their gun rights. How many of these tragedies are a result of a person who is mentally unstable person who rights have been protected (not getting treatment, not taking medication and living as they choose many times at our expense) by the politically correct good people?
