If your question is related to a computer acronym, then "RAM" is short name for "Random access memory". A computer will use RAM to perform all of its programming functions. Software code and data are stored on one or more hard discs, and loaded into RAM as needed. When you shut down, you save anything that you want to keep back onto the hard disc, the copy of the software and any other data in your RAM is discarded. Typical Ram capacity is 500 MB. I am spoiled by having a MAC with 2GB of RAM which allows me to work with more data and sometimes increases speed. Another term you may see is "ROM". This is short for "Read only memory". ROM is used for storing permanent program code that cannot be changed or deleted (At least not easily). It is unfortunate that many articles by very clever and qualified writers will contain these acronyms and the writer assumes that we all understand them. There is probably a list somewhere on the internet but I bet it would be really boring to read it.
