I hate noise; since last 15 days several marriage functions are held here; they play music and disco at very high volume through loud speakers. There is a so called ‘God-man’ near my house; he deliver talks on religious topics to gatherings on his very big roof top; he too uses loud speakers at high volume; such that others can hear it. There is a mosque 200 meters from my home; they recite prayers over loud speaker at high volume. This was renovated recently; so they are celebrating using loud speakers at high volume. Worst was 20/12/12 those who were praying, those who were merrymaking ; all used loud speakers at full volume enough to tear ones ear drums. As per rules loud speakers are to be used at certain intensity and during certain hours; none observes that. I feel sad over the matter; feel helpless. What about you? Please share your views and comments on this ‘noise pollution’. Kalyani 21/12/12

Dear Maa, Here it is marriage season in the north and you know the music and other things when the functions are going on. Everyday, that also in night, the noise of that drums which accompany the bridegroom, apart from the music, is very annoying. An temple with facilities of conducting marriage ceremony is near to our home and most of the time there is some function along with music. In other side every Sunday there is some religious prayers are going on with loud applause and songs. However, we have to tolerate all these as every one has the right to do according to their beliefs and trust.

I think there is nothing wrong in celebrating, but at least, the sound volumes should not be as high as to wake up people even 2 kilometres away!

I think I'd go crazy if I were in your place with all those noise. Sometimes, just the mere shouting of 3 kids could make me feel bad, how much more can those noise you can can make me feel? There should be an ordinance which should limit the volume of speakers being used. This could cause a lot of people to have headache and could be irritable as well.

hi kal, you can hardly call it merry making when it is very very loud that it makes the people around hate the sound instead of love it. i for one do not like noise especially when i am working on something or concentrating so that i could finish the job. i guess, people now are just not sensitive enough to think of other people beside themselves. ann

Dear madam Rules? In India They are only applicable for the posh not for us the common people... These rules are also mentioned here at Bhubaneswar. And they are always misused by the keepers of the law... those who break them, always know that they can easily get away paying some small amounts (read bribes) to the cops... and then they (the cops) will not interfere

Here in our country if that happens kalyni, you can be complained to the community leader. And if they persist, they will be banned from doing so next time. Sometimes, we have to consider the welfare of other people too. Specially, when it's already night time and it's time to sleep.

although i believe that people have the right to express what they want, i am also for respecting the right of the individual to privacy, there is such a thing as religious freedom but there is a thin line separating it from crap and noise pollution, convert one of your rooms to sound proof, think we can do very little when religious, clerics and mass followers are involved.

Unfortunately, in India, people do not consider others' problems in such cases. If someone scolds them, they would say stuff like it is our democratic right and so on, or why are we troubling them. I have seen arrogance of religious pundits at religious meetings, who do not lessen the sound volume, even if someone requests them. Many people instead support such noise. They do not think this noise could cause discomfort to the elderly, or the children, or those preparing for examinations. I feel people should be more sensible. However, who would sensitize them, but their own inner self?

That sounds like it is very annoying! Does this go on all day long? Here we have noise laws, but for the most part they are only enforced after 10 o'clock at night. Then you have to be quiet until about 6 or 7 the next morning. If you are too loud during the night you can get a ticket for disturbing the peace. But during the day I do not think they can give you a ticket.

I would be irritavle and annoed if I live in your area! There is a community church of a certain religion who makes loud noises with their instruments but they are allowed to make noise during sundays only. It is agreed by the neighborhood and the church officials. I don't know where they practice but that is what they had agreed. I mean, we are entitled to what we have in our neighborhood. During events -- marriage ceremonies, birthdays, usually there are videokes and loud musics here in our town. But what agreed here is that they have certain time only. If they want it to extend, they should minimise their noises.
