A chatter box

India

Hubby is not feeling well; he needed a haircut but avoids going to the saloon driving his scooter; so he called the barber home. The barber agreed to come , his condition was ; he will be here for 30 minutes maximum and he will charge 150 rupees; well we agreed because it is home service. One thing I observed he kept talking for the entire duration of his stay here, topics was random A to Z one can say. On being asked, he said, it is his habit because most customers want him to talk because they like his talks. Hubby too said, most barbers in the so called ‘Hair Cutting Saloons’ are kind of chatterbox. Do you visit saloon for haircuts or call the barber home? How much you pay? Do the barbers keep talking, I don’t think all do that. Please share your views and comments on this. Kalyani 21/12/12

I knew this because my husband always tell me that whatever the news one wants to listen or knew about you will find it at Barber saloon. As the barber said it is the habits of all barber to talk non stop whenever they cut the hair or do shaving. My hubby always tells me at barber shop while cutting the hair or doing shaving one should never open their mouth or share their views on the subject they are talking about. Because there might be thew chance that after you left the barber shop he might tell what you have spoken by adding something of his own and may says to them such and such person was saying this. Unnecessary one may fall in trouble because of this.

I wish my hairdressers would talk! They hardly say a thing to me, and I find it uncomfortable, mind you I see getting my hair cut as an ordeal. I have it cut approximately every 14-16 weeks. I have it cropped and it costs me £10 which is reasonable, it only takes about ten minutes to do my hair, they also trim my eyebrows and take off ear hair too as part of the price. They are from Turkey the guys who cut my hair, all they say is how do I want my haircut and that's it, total silence.

Most people who work in salons do tend to chat a bit. It's just the nature of the environment. In some areas, the barber shop or beauty parlor are hangout spots where locals catch up on gossip. The movie Steel Magnolias is a somewhat good example of a beauty parlor being central to a group of women's lives. Prices at salons here can vary greatly, and there are still some places that charge different prices for women's and men's hair. Around here, a trip to a salon just for a haircut can easily set you back anywhere from $15USD to more than $50USD.

Dear ma, I understand that barbers are really a chatter box, that is why here in our country when someone talks about jokes and fun humor they call it "barbers telltale" I don't understand either why barbers are so talkative and they always have something new to talk with... Hugs

Well, Kalyni that's one way of the barber having more customers - being a chatter box. It amuses some customers specially when they become a frequenter already. Usually the talks would be on boxing and other manly topics. That's what i have just observed as i passed by those barber shops.

Dear Madam I had my last hair cut about 8 months back. I am again growing my hair long And I always have used this family-barber. He and his son too (who is in this profession) rarely talk while cutting hair. They will talk as much is needed and will only respond to the queries of their customers like - ok, this style will suite you etc. But yes, I have seen one at Saheed Nagar (a locality in Bhubaneswar) who just needs someone on the chair to talk. And he can talk on anything right from corruption to the policies of Indian governement... and there is nothing that can stop him... and dont trust his knowledge... he only blabbers. and says - I have to keep my clients occupied as I cut their hair

As i understand barbers refers to hair-cutter for men and i have no idea if being talkative is common to them. When i go to the parlor for a haircut however I would prefer a quiet hair-cutter over one who chatter endlessly while cutting my hair.

Kalyani mam, sad to know that prof is not feeling well. Pray him for his speedy recovery. Most of the barbers are in this sort. We don't allow barbers to enter in to our house, i will go to barber shop for my hair cutting and shaving purposes as well as my kids hair cutting activities. Mostly i will pay 75 rupees for cutting and shaving, 50 rupees for my kids hair cut

I think it depends on us. If we are willing to talk to them they will also start their talk. At my place the barber only talks when i speak something first but then he doesnot stops. Some barbers are really like a chatter box. It really irritates because when we are geting a hair cut we need to stay as quiet as possible so that the hairs are cut properly.

Barbers are not noted for home visits here. Most hair professionals cultivate a habit of talking to their clients as a PR exercise. Take an interest and you will get a repeat customer. Hair sylists who listen, chat and support their clients will end of the day keep the cash register active. Cutting of hair has turned into a holistic experience where you shed not only your hair but your worries and concerns too.

Dear Maa, I have visited the saloon here in this place 3-4 times so far. I went there for cutting my kid's hair, when hubby is busy with some other things and they need a hair cutting urgently. (If he is available it is his responsibility). But I have not found any one talk there, 3-4 chairs are there and all are full and others are waiting for their turn. They are simply concentrating their jobs and nothing talking. In our native place, when I was child, a man used to visit occasionally for cutting hair of my grandpa, father, paternal uncle and brother. He knows exactly the time when they need a hair cut. I remember I had thick long hair with full of lice within it. My other tired up with the same (I never allowed my mother to take care of my hair and kill those bugs, as I felt pain) and asked the barber to clean shave my head (I was 7 or 8 years at that time). But he denied doing it, he said her hair is so beautiful and he doesn’t want to clean it, but cut my hair and reduce the length. He was aged that time, when he is unable to visit his son started to come. Now no one is doing the work, all they have to travel to the saloon for a hair cut.

I cut my son's hair myself since it is difficult to get him out to take him to the barber. For my hair, I go to the salon about every 6 weeks to get it cut off because I prefer it very short. I wish I could figure out a way to cut my own hair so I could save the money!

Well that's good you cut son's hair, i think you can cut yours because they are short as you say, you can keep one mirror at front and another in back.

Yeah! I have noticed that as well. I guess it is their way of entertainment so that it would encourage people to come to their salons again and choose them as their barber/hair dresser.

Here in our country there is a term called, "Kwentong Barbero" (literally translated as Barber's Stories)because barbers are known to be naturally talkative. They told stories while doing their job. But that popular phrase was used when someone told a false, invented story.
