What Other End Of The World Predictions--Besides 12/21/12--Have You Survived?

I'm 60 years old and can remember several times when the world as we know it was predicted to come to an end but it didn't happen. For instance, it was once predicted that, when it became 2000, computers would all go haywire due to not being programmed to handle years beginning with the number two instead of the number one. You might say that it was predicted that the number two was really going to hit the fan. At the very least, we might have our Internet access taken from us (at least, temporarily) until someone was able to fix the mess. At the worst? Missiles from our various silos would all rise at the same time and destroy the planet. Later that night--after returning home from celebrating the arrival of 2000 with my mom and dad--I was back online chatting with various ones of my friends. A few hours later, I was watching The Rose Bowl Parade. In short, it was business as usual... This is a discussion thread for sharing memories from your own experience(s) of living through the end of the world and/or those you've heard your parents and grandparents describing.

I can also remember living through several end of the world predictions, and I expect another will be predicted in time. It amazes me that people will take some obscure inscription from the Ancient Babylonians or Aztecs and use it to calculate a date for the end of the world. I find it quite amusing that some people actually expect me to believe that such cultures had knowledge of something that we can not really conceive of today. Even more amusing is the fact that the dates predicted never appear to be in the past or maybe centuries in the future, instead they are usually imminent and often only a couple of months away. To be fair. the Year 2000 bug was not a prediction but simply highlighted the fact that we did not know what would happen. Computers used a two digit year at rthe time, so the year 99 would be followed by the year 00, which is a conflict that had never occurred before. The Year 2000 bug simply stated that this was an unprecedented situation and that the outcome could not be predicted.

The 2000 bug was more like an end to the Internet possibility rather than the end of the world--even though there were some who believed that computer confusion might cause various weapons of mass destruction to get put into action. I remember that several of us who met online exchanged home addresses in case we were no longer able to send email to each other.

I agree that the Year 2000 bug could have potentially caused a vast amount of devastation. If computers had actually ceased to operate then a lot of security measures for nuclear reactors and other highly sensitive areas would have totally failed.
