me and the haggler in me

Yeah, you heard it right. I'm a haggler. I haggle a lot, so much so that when I go to this supermarket, since I cannot bargain with the price I would make friends with the person-in-charge of meat and ask her to only weigh the meat after she had it sliced into thin pieces. This is what I always do and I noticed that their usual procedure was to get the weight of the meat first and put the price on it before slicing it. However, I noticed that the weight would dramatically go down after the chopping or slicing (which we don't get to see since it is done inside). So I made a request to the lady in charge to only weigh my meat after it has been sliced and she agreed to it. I had been enjoying this privilege, meaning I had been paying the exact amount for the amount of the meat I'd buy until I happened to go to another supermarket. Me and my big haggling mouth requested the same request but the lady in charge of this other supermarket refused because that is not the procedure they are supposed to follow. Then me and my big mouth mentioned the other supermarket, telling her something like, "How come that in this ___________supermarket I always have it sliced first then weighed for pricing?" She still refused so I did not buy. A few days after I'm back to the first supermarket and this lady told me the incident at the other supermarket, that she had been reprimanded and scolded by her boss for doing what I had been asking her to do. So I said, what? The two Chinese store owners are talking to each other about this? Anyway, this lady from the first supermarket told me to just not say anything about she was doing to me so she won't be reprimanded. So I said "okay." And the nice sales lady had my meat sliced into pieces before weighing it. But of course, I am not telling anyone about it. The rule is crazy, isn't it? I think customers should be made to pay only for the amount of meat that she buys. What do you think?

Hi! Here when we buy mutton it is sliced first and then weighed and its opposite is not done here at our place. I feel that the lady at the super market who did not accede to your request was not fair. You should make a complaint to higher authorities that unfair trade practices are being adopted by them.

They say it is how it is practiced in that store, DP. They had been instructed to do so.

Wow!! Quite interesting. I have never considered this, and not sure how many places would actually do this around here. I know a lot of them only will once you buy the meat. But I did hear on Dateline once that they always include the styrofoam when weighing your package, etc. so usually it would weigh a lot less otherwise, but I guess they figure when the meat is on sale for quite a bit less no one will even notice or say anything. I think it should be left more up to us instead.

Hi Krause. It is a problem for me here but I usually choose which store to buy so I won't be made to pay for the incorrect weight.
