I recommend for people to go to a career training workshop to see what skills they got, what jobs are the best jobs for them (I mean not only for skills but also for the heart and passion. What job will satisfy one )
During November I have been through such workshop and one of the starting points for me was the simple 4 questions questionnaire I had to ask 3 people that know me for a long time and know very good who I am. Those questions were : 1) What strengths do you see in me ? (things you think I am strong at)
2)What talents do you see in me ? (not necessarily things I'm strong at, but, I have the ability to be strong at)
3)What things would you ask my help with ? (what do you think I can help you with)
4)What profession to you see me working at in 5 years from now ?
With the answers I got from my relatives and neighbors, I went to my occupational trainer and we discovered together that I have a good ability to teach and it's also my heart will and I also have some good knowledge with computers, so, the best thing would be teaching computers for people with difficulty at it.
I have been volunteering in that for the last 3 weeks and I'm happy with that. I also tried to get accepted to one job.
Many other things in the workshop were how to introduce ourselves in 60 minutes and telling about our work experience, education and a strong line about ourselves. How to manage a conflict ( the way of the elephant is to find a solution that works for my interest AND for the others too. Being sensitive but also assertive).
We also had an interesting discussion about whether would you take a free salary every month for not going to work or, would you go to work and earn your salary.
The bottom line was that going to work will keep us healthy mentally and active and with taste and meaning for life. Sitting at home, even if volunteering, is less good for us than going to work and have a real responsibility.
Your take, mylotters , do you have anything to say about it ? Any similar workshop experience, any other subjects you have learned ? any opinions ?

I've never actually been through a career training workshop, however when I was in college one of the elective classes that I took was a personality course and during the semester that I was taking this class, we did a lot of different personality studies and one of them was to evaluate the skills and interests that we had as individuals to learn what careers might be fitting for our individual personalities. I really liked this as it confirmed that the jobs that I wanted to have in my life were very fitting to my personality.

Did it really help you ? I mean , what were you doing before that workshop ? Did you try working in something that you didn't like ?
Did you talk to an occupational trainer ? That whole training thing is interesting me.
Today, many people are trainers in their area. Some people are diet trainers, some are personal trainers, some are economical trainers...That's so cool :)
I think I can also be a personal trainer when teaching in private, I can teach very good and give a good guidance for people with difficulty to understand things.
With the workshop I helped others to look for a job (even if they didn't get accepted, some of them didn't know how to try to apply).

That was a local thing in my city where I live. I'm not sure you have one of those workshops where you live. That workshop costs a lot of money, some thousands of dollars, but, the money was given by donators who cared about us ( the unemployed people who want to work) so we had to pay only some tens of $ or 150 ILS ( ILS=0.27 USD today).
What did you like about my story ? Are you looking for a job too ?
Maybe you better try that simple questionnaire for a start ?
