i have a nine year old black lab who sleeps all day and eats on occasion. should i get a puppy to liven him up, or will he feel abandoned? give me some advice please.

We have a ten year old shepherd mix, and she was our only dog until about a year ago when my brother got a redbone hound puppy. I think our older dog likes the company, but she is showing signs of arthritis and the puppy (who is already quite a bit bigger than her) sometimes gets a little rough while they are playing. I think it could go either way... as long as you are giving your lab plenty of attention then I don't know if I would bring a new dog on the scene. But in our case I think it worked out pretty well because they keep each other company when we are not around.

thank you for your response. we have been dog sitting for about two weeks now, and he seems to be doing ok, but the dog is 6, not a puppy, so i dont know how much of a difference that makes. he has been getting sad because the other dog gets more attention, but when i see that i make sure to love on him, an i think he is oing ok.

Today is one year since I had to put down my 14 year old black lab, Tara. I would just try to make him liven up with attention from you, a puppy may make him feel left out. Just my opinion though.
