Scary

I have family members that work with, or at the local hospitals. There are 3 within 15 minutes of each other. And for the most part, the same doctors are affiliated with each. One just bought another out. The truth of the matter is the better hospitals are only a few hours away. However, in an emergency, you are going to go to one of those closest. Which is better than the other is a matter of opinion. I've used two of the three over the years and I have my opinions therefore. What's the scary part? Some of you know that my father in law passed just a few weeks ago. He had been in ICU for 9 days. It was an emergency as he could not breathe and they had to intubate him and sedate him. His doctor is not local and he was therefore signed in through the hospital itself. This was a problem when we sought a consult from a physician that wasn't part of the hospital staff. The doctor could not even look at him because of red tape. This was after several days of not getting any answers that we made the request and my husband and I were quite upset about this. His blood work and cultures were not producing answers. In my opinion they were lying to us. He was so swollen! They said it was because his body was fighting the infection. His stools, well, due to the fact that I've been deathly ill before myself, I knew it wasn't normal though they said it was. We went through the well it's the flu, it's pneumonia, it's fungal. We went through his blood pressure going through the roof and also being below 50. His temp was extremely high, it was low. Guessing games producing no results. On the morning of his passing we had all gone to the room. As I stepped back into the hall out of the way so immediate family had better access I saw a cockroach crawling over the top of the threshold of the room! What is also scary is that we have heard, remember, we have family working with and at the facility, is that 3 more individuals have passed with the same issues? I can't say what to look out for. See, he was fine one day, complaining only that he felt he was getting a little chest congestion. The next day he was in ICU. What truly happened or brought about his death we will never know. It was during the holiday. Was that part of the problem? The regular doctors being away? Apparently not since this has occurred again since those doctors have returned. Would have moving him to another facility helped? Since the tests weren't productive I doubt it. But to me, this is frightening.

kind of sounds like neglect and contamination in that hospital. to bad he didnt get moved sooner. why did you not get him moved? what was their excuse for not moving him to the better place? sounds like a scarey place that did not care.

Because we were afraid to move him when his blood pressure was so low, or so high. Plus, his wife has a say in the matter and we all knew he hated Birmingham. We had to wait on test initially and some of them took a few days. In the meantime they had at least cleared the fluid from his lungs and around his heart. The point is, at the times we discussed moving him it would have been detrimental. This was a no win situation. When there are several kids and a spouse involved, you have to all agree. The other deaths have occurred since his. You would have thought they would have learned something from his case. I certainly hope they've figured it out since the others! Bunnybon, as I said, even if we had moved him they would have started from scratch, new tests that take several days. This was a no win situation. Besides, you think they were going to listen to me over the doctors. People think I just know cars. I know a heck of a lot more. My husband listens, but that's one person versus 4 others.
