Are you right?

As children we love to be right, that means others are wrong. But have you considered as an adult if you are the one who is right and you state that, the conversation stops there. You learn nothing more by being right. Of course if you are the one that is wrong, people will continue to tell you they are right.

Like my father who always thinks he's in the right, even when everyone else knows he's in the wrong, he won't back down, he won't apologize if he's proven wrong, and if he doesn't get his own way he will sulk. We had a problem with a gas leak, and he just said it was dust, and refused to do anything about it, he was right and that was the end of it, but neither mum and I were happy, after all it's not good if you think you have a gas leak. Well it took a stranger to tell him it was no dust smell he still wouldn't call the gas people so mum did it and because she wouldn't let it go he wouldn't talk to her. Turns out it WAS a gas leak and did father apologize? did he hell! It could have been a different story if no call was made and the gas exploded! Stubborn b*stard.

What you've failed to mention here is those situations where you are right but the person that is wrong is convinced that they are right and the conversation just seems to go on and on. This is the way that it is when I am having discussions with my sister-in-law. I've actually given up on trying to have a discussion with her when I know that she is wrong because it can easily end up being a discussion that will never come to an end because she is never happy until she is told that she is right and someone else is wrong.

But you have the perfect weapon. Just tell her, she's right and put an end to the conversation. Peace will reign. Pretty soon she'll quit because after all one who won't fight back is no fun at all

I will frequently let a conversation go one without proclaiming that I'm right just to hear different points of view. Sometimes it turns out I am not as right as I thought I was! Same thing here, I like to hear what people think. Being right can be boring and if you don't listen you can get a very narrow vision of the world. I wish I had learned this sooner as life would have been even more interesting if I had not been so eager to be proven right.

Isn't it nice to know that being older doesn't mean we can't learn a different point of view. I tried this one on Hubby, who is always right, and he just grinned. So I agreed, he's always right, and said to myself, accept when he's wrong, some old dogs just won't learn new tricks.

Now that you mention...I have never had any trouble being told when I was wrong.

Everyone is right and everyone is wrong. Being right depends on what you believe to be right. And being wrong depends on what you believe to be wrong. Its ying and yang. It is a stalemate.
