Cold Call

Today I was called by a lady wanting to conduct a "survey". I loathe cold calls and am usually very difficult with the callers. However, today's caller was a pleasant lady from the Philippines..so she said. I was slightly concerned when she said that she had not heard of Manila though! I then wondered if she is unusual. Do people routinely know the name if their capital city? Is not knowing such things a problem!

Hmmm...that's funny. I would imagine one would know the name of their capital city. Even the uneducated people in India would have heard of the name...though they wouldn't know it's the capital city. I guess I probably missed coming across all those people out there who haven't heard of their capital city. And you are the lucky one. But I would be VERY VERY surprised if a person conducting a survey and claiming to be from a particular country hadn't heard of their capital country. You probably pronounced it wrong

Hmmm...though I've come across many Indian call centre workers who do not speak good English and who read from a script, I understand that such workers handle the 'local' population. Almost all the call centres that handle off shore work (US, UK, Australia) choose workers who they will train to perfection based on the accent of the place. They wouldn't take a risk with that. Seems like you came across a 'not so bright' Philipino.

I thought she was Indian at first. When I asked her whether she was in Mumbai or Bangalore she quickly said that she was in the Philippines, I am not sure that she really was. However, in my experience Indian call centre workers generally are well educated and speak better english. Once off her script she floundered somewhat. At the end I thanked her for an entertaining call and that despite getting no sale she had been most tenacious, then I had to explain what that word means. But not knowing where your own capital is strikes me as a very poor show.

I think this lady you've encountered is a big time liar if she heard what you've said correctly, maybe, just maybe she is not from that country. Imagine how could anyone say I am from this place and when you say the name of the capital city she didn't know, that's impossible!

There is the possibility that Filipinos call their capital something else in their native language and that this maybe young person was not familiar with the anglicised name. I know that this is the case in many non English speaking countries. But I think that seeing as the country has had such a huge American influence over the last century that this would not be the case in this bizarre case. Perhaps she just did not understand your accent?

If she didn't understand me then I have to wonder why she is employed to call English folk at home. We have a myriad local accents. Who knows.

The mind boggles! We have a lot of call centres here that are actually based in Asia. I had the run around with our phone and internet provider the other day dealing with incompetent people in India or Pakistan or wherever it was. Eventually got put through to a call centre in Brisbane, one hour drive from me. I now have their direct number so will be calling them directly from now on. It was like winning the lottery getting that number I tell you! A free call number too!

Terminating the call is usually the best thing to do.

Cold calling is still an effective sales tactic for many businesses, to some it serves as legitimate way to reach potential customers but one should learn how to use it effectively. Never create a lie behind that just to get customers attention it is not proper, I don't think anyone living in own homeland doesn't know the capital city it is very bad. Unless otherwise she didn't heard you clearly...

When you say "legitimate" you mean to the business because from the point of the caller it is far from welcome. I sometimes think that call centre workers are told that Britons do not object to being called at home. In fact most do. Although I understand the logic behind not saying who they are calling from first, I object to being asked if I am Mr P1kef1sh before they say who they are.

Got your point and I am with you for this, I am stating the fact for your caller not for you. If they want to get customers they have to train their employees well on how to use it effectively. Because most of us will object instantly..for sure.

As a Canadian married to an American, I can not imagine people not knowing the capital of their own country. However, I am not that familiar with the education systems in other countries. Who knows what they may learn? Then again in some tird world countries, the child may not have a chance to gain an education, so it may not be a surprise if someone may not know the capital city of their country.

What? If she is from this country Philippines, how come she does not know about Manila? Maybe she is saying that she has not been there, that is possible because the Philippines is made up of several islands. My island is very far from where Manila is but I know many things about Manila and I'd been there too. Was the lady caller an impostor?

I don't think that she was an imposter, just not very bright. Her English was fine whilst she was reading her script, but not so good in general conversation.

Well, she can be only trying to be on your good side by saying she's from the Philippines just so she can get the survey from you. I'm not sure, there could be lots of reasons why she haven't heard of her own capital city. As for cold calls, I also don't like them. I'm not really friendly and outgoing in a sense that I don't get too comfy to complete strangers instantly. Except of course in very rare and limited circumstances when me and a stranger turned good friend hit it off. I have experienced the same when I was still in Manila and I think the best way is to firmly but gently say no. No matter how nice she is or how persistent, if I have something else going on or it's not the right time for me well, I'm sorry but it would have to be a no.

If I am not in the mood I simply hang up. But yesterday I wanted to play. I feel sorry for them really, it's such a horrible way to way to make a living.

That's strange, how come she's from there and not knowing the place, maybe she wants to know what you can say from that place. some people sometimes pretend not knowing things but actually they just want to know other things that they haven't heard, I encounter somebody like those people
