Disabling Java

Has anyone else been hearing that on the news they are saying to disable Java on your computer temporarily due to some problem with malicious hackers? I have a pretty good anti-virus program, but do we all still need to do that? Have you done it? How long are we supposed to disable it? Did you do it and notice you couldn't use any of your favorite sites anymore? Do tell. I did it on two computers (my desktop and dad's lap top) here and don't want to be screamed at if my brother tries to use my dad's laptop for something with the eBay auctions (for printing out prep-paid labels). He is known for having a bad temper here and screaming at us for things like that and more.

I am pretty good at updating but I was wondering about this enabling thing. I actually read more on how to do that and it is actually uninstalling it. I wonder how many sites actually use Java and which ones they are. So far FB is fine, not that it is a big deal if it didn't work there cause I don't play any games except maybe Songpop.

I have not disabled it, and haven't noticed anything to be extremely concerned about as of yet. Haven't heard of a widespread outbreak of "people being hacked" because they had java enabled on their browsers, I doubt that is the case and it's most likely a precautionary move by Microsoft/Java. It would probably have to be disabled (By choice of course) until a patch by either Microsoft or java is released, who knows what that will be.
If I am required to disable java throughout my entire PC and not just through my browser, then I stubbornly won't even bother to consider the such because I play a game called Minecraft at least one hour a day, which is developed straight out of the java platform. I wouldn't worry about it too much, but it's always good to have backups of things you wouldn't ever want to lose (Pictures, documents, phone numbers etc..)
