Wondering why so many TV series were cancelled this year!

I just realised that another one of the TV series that I was watching is cancelled. I was waiting for new epeisodes to start but it never happened! This year, I have seen a lot of newly produced shows being calncelled and some of the older ones have reached their finale and they are ending this year. I am wondering what are we going to watch next year! The series that I am talking about is the "Ringer", but "The Secret Circle", "Missing" and "Terra Nova" were also cancelled without any warning. I was watching all of them and then I found out that sadly, they had trouble and they won't return for a new season. How do you feel when a show that you have been watching is being cancelled?

I absolutely hate when this happens. One of my favorite shows might be getting cancelled also, Hart of Dixie. I'm so upset about this... I found this out the other day and I wanted to cry! lol. I became attached to it in a sense...

It saddens me, especially if it is a new show. The ones that Really hurt were my daytime soaps. I had seen them for a very long time and I was in mourning wheen they left the air. I guess the reason, low viewership. More people are on their PCs or playing video games. It is so sad.

That is a fine example! I used to watch Bold And The Beautiful. I was there when it started but like most soaps they started a storyline I didn't like and I stopped. I know how you feel. you wait all week to watch your favorite show only to find it is off the air. Bummer!

When you have included a show in your everyday life and you have "cleared" an hour during the day to watch it, then it's very dissapointing to find out that it's going to be discontinued. I don't watch day time shows but I always remember my mother watching "The bold and the beautiful" when I was a child. It was a daily show in the afternoon and me and my brother knew that this was her time so we didn't interrupt her! As I am typing I realise that this is the worst example ever, because "The bold and the beautiful" is the only show that's still on every day, since I was a baby! She doesn't watch it any more but I know how much she loved it back then and she would be really sad if it was discontinued.

IT seems shows dont' last as long as they used to. The sitcoms or the prime time dramaa.. they used to last 10 years! now, the sitcoms last about 5 if they are lucky and the dramas about the same. Plus, they have dropped the episode count...there is only about 16 episodes per "season"...back in the day it was 26 per season! Plus I think they just get to the point that there is no where else to go with the storyline. They have their regulars and you can't replace a regular very well. Actors come and go. Often they will replace a departing character with a new one and the new one is not as well liked as the first one was. And then they have everyone sleeping with each other to the point that they have all "been with each other" in one way or another and they can't put them back together and it still make sense...so what else is there to do with them! And...the producers seem to always stray from the "point" of each character. They have a character that is single and all the escapades or problems adn issues a single person has...that is the theme of the show..the structure of the show is based around that...then they have that person get married. End of show! We tuned in and liked it cause the character was single...it isn't the same character if married so we don't watch anymore. I can name quite a few that were like this...past and present... Ugly Betty was good while she was the working kind of girl..but when they promoted her up to editor and all...it just wasn't funny anymore. "Rhoda" back in the 70's...we loved following the antics and silliness of a single girl in New York! Then they had her get married in the finale of the first season and down hill it went. Had her get divorced second season and some of it came back, but it still wasn't the same as they made her sister different. If they'd just kept Rhoda single, it'd been a long term hit Or The Practice...was great until they had Dylan McDermot and that other attorney get married. The friction and problems between them as single was part of the plot and story...they got married and that ended that! Having single women suddenly become mothers..that is not why we watch! We want to see the single woman do her thing...Ally McBeal...was great...until they had a 10 year old girl show up saying "you are my mother" and Ally became a single mother. She couldn't hardly take care of herself so to give her a daughter...was just totally stupid. I don't even watch tv much anymore. For this reason. I get tired of them changing the plot so much and then more than that.. I am sick of all the s(e)x and the violence in prime time dramas these days.

An interesting part of coffeebreak's comment has to do with the trend of television, especially the ones in the US. Since you mention that there used to be longer seasons, there used to be less TV or cable channels years ago. Nowadays, you have tons of channels and many of them have some TV shows. Sitcoms, medical drama, detective police series, and so on can be seen in cable TV channels. (I'm not talking about reruns.) Many cable channels manage to have popular TV series on their line up. Another trend that has been going in the last 20 years or so is the ongoing reality television. If you notice, network TVs and cable channels are showing reality show programs.

I guess that when that happens, they change the focus to other characters. If there are no twists and turns in the plot, everything is predictable and they aren't interesting any more! However when it comes to newly produced shows, I believe it is too soon to cancel them from the first season. Maybe they have just started to attract the audience. They are looking for quick successes but I think that if it is going to be a success or not will be shown with time. Then, I am not in the mood to start a watching a new show if I know that it might not continue next year! It will be a waste of my time!

Terra Nova was cancelled a good while back. There was talk of trying to continue the show by having Netflix take over but that never materialized.

Yes, I think it was last year, right? I started watching it later but didn't check if it was going to continue! When I found out it was too late! lol I guess they should have done something back then. It's a shame because if the time passes and the show is not continued you can't make a new production after some time because it will loose the audience and the continuity! The new shows that are coming don't seem so interesting, but maybe they will turn out to be successful! Who knows?

The trouble with some shows is that if you don't see the initial episode, you have trouble understanding the story. Fringe, which is ending is somewhat like that. Last Resort, which has been cancelled, is definitely like that.

I am sure they have their reasons every time and they are probably dissapointed by the views. But I really think that some of those shows had great potentials, I watched a couple of the shows that replaced them and I think they are never going to reach the views that they want.

seems they always put to much into the ratings game. Problem is many arent included in those. One year my 5 fav. shows were cancelled. They need a better way to see who is watching..

These are the ones I was watching and I was waiting for the new epeisodes to come this year. There is a big list of cancelled tv shows, which ones you were watching? The worst part is that I was looking at the new series that replaced the old ones and they don't seem that great!

The writing was pretty much on the wall for all of them, especially Ringer. Terra Nova got decent ratings, but it cost so darn much FOX didn't see to bring it back. Which is a shame. Because I, and many professional critics, believe if they had renewed it the show had a great time to grow, and therefor justifying the bigger cost. But I always keep an eye on ratings so if a show is doing badly, I drop it. I don't usually want to get attached to a show if I know it's going to be canceled. Have you picked up any favorites this year?

Honestly, I don't tend to be the kind of person that watches a lot of television and the reason for that is because of the fact that many of the shows that I have really gotten invested to in the past have been cancelled and for that reason I don't have anything that I really watch any more. I remember when my all time favorite television show was cancelled, I went through all of the stages of grief, just like I would go through if one of my friends or family members was to die. I guess I just invested too much into that particular television show.

Haha! It sounds like you really loved that show! I am dissapointed as well and haven't found anything worth watching from the new shows, so I guess I will continue watching my old favourite ones that are still on. I decided that I will wait for a series to continue to the second season before I start watching it!

maybe the producer get caught in a financial crisis so it is best to cancel the TV series because the management could no longer pay the stars or they stars they select ask for higher fees. so some TV series with little budget close or cancel. sometimes, the reason is the series is not commercially good as the audience would not like to watch it when the topic get bored or the other network get more competition with other rival networks. so the TV network or management need to cancel or make another TV production to make it more salable to the viewing audience.

I imagine that it's all about money for them! But it is still dissapointing when I am watching a show and it's cancelled. They say that people forget easily, especially on TV but I am not one of them! Anyway, I hope the new shows will be equally good because I watched a couple of the ones that started on September and I didn't find them very interesting!

Well everyone will feel upset if his or her favourite TV series be cancelled, but nobody can do nothing about that because in the TV market, the competition are so severe so that there are many TV series will be cancelled every year.

I agree, it is the market but we are the consumers and this whole system works because of the viewers! I think that they are looking for quick hits and they are not interested in creating a good show that will last in time! It's very hard to find the next "Lost" or a successful show like my old favourite "Friends". I have seen some of the new shows that replaced the old ones and they are not that good. It is very dissapointing to stop a show after the first season. Maybe they have invested a lot of money on them from the beginning and they had great expectations that didn't come true!

Probably the series program are flop. The viewers made it not appealing to them. It is like having an article with no page views, the program should be terminated. Then change to another different theme for the new program to capture the like of the viewers.

I know that if it doesn't get the expected views then they need to find something new, but they keep a lot of programs for one seasons and they cancel them all together! They could simply keep some of them and move them to a new time zone without so much competition in order to keep the viewers and make it stronger. It is unfair to cancel so many shows at the same time.

its very annoying cause you get so hooked and then they just cut off the fun.whenever i get a series i watch it till am done, i have at times stayed up all nite then to dash next day to the video store to pick the next part only to be told its been cancelled or they have not yet released a second part.i think the best thing would be to not allow them release any before the whole series has been done.

I used to stay up all night to watch Lost! I started watching it when it was already at Season 3 in US so I had so many epeisodes and I just couldn't stop! They cancelled some good series this year with great potentials in my opinion. And some of my favourite ones just ended after many years, so I am trying to find something worth watching! Thanks for your comment, have a wonderful day! :)

For me in an instance I will be disgusted but I must also to consider other factors. That is, updating of movie series quality if not a real problem beyond their control. In usual way there is always a warning in case there is a change if not the stoppage of showing in the series. in some instances they don't mind the reactions of the viewers what matter for them is how much they will earn or lost. It is in deed a business, while for us viewers, an entertainment. That is the different. They sometimes forgot, that, without viewers any show will not survive they lack the essence of customer care and maybe also one reason. Why ?. they lost the business and in no time will totally close the business and venture another.

This is the reality, I just think that the entertainment market used to be more friendly to the viewers! lol Now they probably have so many proposals that it's not a big deal for them to throw away an old script and find another show to replace it. I really hope that the wuality will improve in the future and we will have a lot of great shows to watch!

I don't like and many times it is because the network scheduled the show at too competitive a time and it never really had a chance for a second season. So many of them are left with a cliff hanger, too. So you are left forever up in the air about what happened. Yet for some reason they renew some terrible shows season after season. Also they will take a good show off and replace it with a terrible show that only lasts a few weeks because it so bad no one will watch it.

Your last points are so true! They might take out a great series and replace it with a new one which is a dissapointment! This way the first series was wasted even though it could have worked, the viewers are unhappy with the change and the competitive channels get them all since the new series is not strong enough yet to keep them. You have made good points, thanks for your comment!

I hate when that happens, especially when they end the first seasons in a way that you know that there is more to the show and cant see what it is. I think that happened with true calling or something like that a few years back and i was just mad because they cancelled in the middle of the first season and i was liking the show so much.

I felt really dissapointed as well because I was looking forward for the next season! Especially on the Secret Circle, I though it was very interesting and successful but then they decided to end it. I think that with one season there is not enough time to see if it's worth it, unless it's a huge dissapointment.

I can tell you a little bit about Terra Nova. It has potential, but the FOX exec did not want to take chances. The show actually did pretty well, but FOX execs were hoping that it would get tons and tons of viewers (that's how I predict it). To this day, it was uncertain why they decided to cancel this potential show. It all comes down to MONEY. Terra Nova is deemed to be a very expensive show to produce and to sustain. So far, no other networks have shown interests, maybe because of potential costs. You will be able to watch any TV shows including what would come up. It's almost like cycles. I like Terra Nova and was a bit dissapointed by its cancellation. More or less, we can't really cry over something beyond our control. Somehow, there will always some great or better replacements.

I hear that some TV series will be cancelled if there are not enough people watching them. Anyway,it's annoying to meet this kind of situation. Besides, several TV series I have been watching are cancelled for a time and will be back as said on the Internet.I hope it's true.Otherwise,I will be mad at them.

Which ones are coming back! I hope they will change their mind! It seems impossible that those series didn't have enough viewers! They were very interesting, with a lot of action and good ratings on IMDB. It is not fair to the viewers, I hope they will replace them with more interesting new series because what I have seen so far is not satisfying..

I really hate when a good show is cancelled without warning. I really did like the show Missing. It was very good and I was surprised when it was cancelled. I'm currently watching a show called Deception that I love and I read recently that it was probably not getting renewed. Thats the only thing I dislike about getting involved with new shows. You never know if its going to last or not.
