Family treasures

Have you been passed down any great family treasures. I got a few antique pieces from my great grandmother. My favorite is a Hoosier cupboard. Would you ever sell a passed down piece. I watch pawn stars and people sell off their grandfathers war stff. I would feel guilty selling off a piece of family history like that.

We had a collection of carbide lamps, a 1930 phonograph, a 1925 sewing machine and 3 trunks or chests in our ancestral home, as far as I can remember. Twenty years ago, when the caretaker went on a weekend break, the house was burglarized and the collection was stolen. It would have valued a fortune I suppose. My brother had a suspect we the case wasn't followed up for reasons I do not know of. I was still 12 years old then.

Wow, you are so lucky. I do not have anything passed down from my grandparents. The only thing I have received is RM1 from my grandmother which they divided among the siblings. My 7th sibling, that is my brother he did passed down to me his stamp album collection and coins collection. I am still keeping it and planned to passed it down to my son. I hope in the future these stamps and coins will have some commercial values and sentimental element to be remembered.

i love history and antiques and anything old so i would never sell anything i have that has been passed down through the family. i have a few little pieces like a brooch that my grandmother used to wear. a vase that my grandfather bought my grandmother. my grandfather's WW1 medals and the postcards (which started me collecting vintage and antique postcards) he sent my grandmother during that war plus my grandfather's WW1 photo album which is pretty cool. he served on a ship that was in the Dardenelles conflict. i have also come across a lot of old stuff at thrift stores and garage sales which i would never get rid of. i love to think of the hands and the history of the people that have touched the item.

My house is filled with so many of them. When the ancestral house was sold, since no other member in my husband's family has a large house all the stuff was dumped in our house but I am happy because they are all over one hundred years and therefore I can safely say they are antiques.

Family treasures? Our house. My father wants to pass down to us but at the end, he decided to sell the house when we have financial crisis. Then, when no one buys our house, he wants to sell the three cars. I am glad no one buys our house because that is our family treasure and we can pass it to our children in next generation

Unfortunately, we don't have any great family treasures. I'm not sorry for it because of the financial value or snobbishness, but it would have been nice to have some memories from earlier ages. But I understand those, too, who sell some stuff... if they don't feel thame same about family heirloom as you and I, don't see any sentimental value in it, and they need money, why shouldn't they sell them? At least they are going to get to places where the owners would be really glad to have them.

My husband and I have my grandparents wedding rings, and I have my great-grandmother's gold bracelet, along with something my mother gave me, and several pieces I bought myself.

My maternal grandma gave me just a few of her antique jewelries. And most of her other jewelries are now with my mom, which of course, later on, she would be passing it on to me and my siblings. Also, at my mom's house are antique furniture and porcelain plates and also antique silverware. I am just sad that a lot of my grandma's stuff was sold by my uncle. I am not sure how much he has earned from it but I'd rather that he just kept it and stayed within the ancestral home. If only I knew that my uncle would be selling my grandma's stuff, I should have taken a few of them here in Manila. One of the things I'd probably keep are the antique jars, some manuscripts and also the yearbook of my great grandfather when he graduated with a degree in Medicine at the University of the Philippines. One of his classmates was our Philippine National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.
