Is it true that the hobbit is the first story before the happenings in the movie of the lord of the rings?

Yes this is true and if you see the movie be ready because this will be in three parts as well. I read the hobbit years ago, and have been waitng a long time for them to make it with real life people. It was great if you liked the Lord of the Rings then you will love The Hobbit also. I take it you are not a reader or you would ahve already known that "The Hobbit" came first.

Ah, now there's a question. The Hobbit is Bilbo's story so yes, it comes before LOTR (which is Frodo's story when Bilbo passes on the ring). It tells of how Bilbo found the ring and his adventures on a journey "there and back again". Whether it's the first story is another question entirely. Tolkien was completely obsessive about Middle Earth, creating languages, traditions, history and everything else (which is why it has endured so well, of course) - so the Hobbit is just one story in a living world. There are loads of other books in the same world that come before, after, during and around the main two (or four if you count LOTR as three books). Unfortunately, I find LOTR completely unreadable it's so long, detailed and slow. The Hobbit, however, is a really good, enjoyable read and definitely worth the time even if you can't handle the monotony of LOTR!

I grew up playing role-playing games (real paper-and-dice ones, not computer ones), many of which are based on the standards Tolkien introduced, such as Elves being tall and skinny rather than tiny little fairy-like things as in traditional mythology. And I've read The Hobbit. And started LOTR half a dozen times (and got bored). And watched the films. And have a friend who loves the books/world. And... Yeah, lots of reasons.

Yes and No. The Hobbit does tell the story of something happening before the action in the Lord of the Rings. It tells how the dwarves, Bilbo and Gandalf journey to the Lonely Mountain and try to take back Erebor and its treasure from Smaug, the Dragon. It also reveals an important event related to the Lord of the Rings: it shows how Bilbo got the Ring. It is not however the FIRST story. Tolkein wrote another book that tells what happened waaaay before anything in the Lord of the Rings or in the Hobbit. The book is called the Silmarillion, and it starts with the making of the world. It tells about lots of events, including how elves, humans and dwarves came to be, and how they fought each-other and the forces of evil - an even greater evil than Sauron. I'm not telling more, but it's definitely worth reading (or listening to the audio books - there is no movie).

It seems that is what it supposed to be. It tell about his uncle and how it got the ring in the first place. Lord of the Rings is more on the journey to return the ring. Watch it on Imax for the effect! Great scenery.

Yes. The story of "The Hobbit" is an adventure that Bilbo Beggins experienced when he was young, long before Frodo was born and long before the epic events in "The Lord of the rings". Although some of the characters that appear in the movie are not present in the book, I think Peter Jackson made quite a decent movie.

Yes it is, the Hobbit is how the Lord of the rings came to be. So yes indeed it's the story before the story.
