Thunder snow

Canada

Have you ever seen this let alone heard of it. I was just watching the weather network and in Toronto Ontario last night they had a thunder storm during a snow storm. This is very strange. I have never seen a thunderstorm in the winter time. This is very rare. The weather sure is changing.

That is really strange. We get a lot of snow storms but I've never heard it thunder out while we are having snow. I think your right the weather is really different than it use to be.

The other day when we finally did get snow we got a bit of thunder. It was only one or two rumbles, but yes it was thunder. I think we may have had that before, but it's been awhile. Of course in my neck of the woods we hardly ever have snow.

Perhaps the wet snow is more prone to that...

Thunder clouds which drop snow rather than rain (or hail) are fairly rare but not unknown. It's important to understand that MOST rain starts off as what we would call snow but melts as it warms in the lower atmosphere and (in the last few hundred feet) becomes 'rain'. The weather is not changing, actually. You are seeing things which don't happen very often but which you are likely to see every 10, 20 or 40 years anyway.

Inside the thunder cloud, it is ALWAYS snowing or hailing (water droplets are usually frozen). It just melts (or sometimes doesn't) when it gets to the ground!

Hi poppoppop. Well I havent personally experienced snowfall. But I do have witnesses a lot of thunderstorms. However, still this combinations looks quite odd to me. However, Nature is so mysterious that we shouldn't be surprised. Here anything can happen. Anyways have a nice day ... SuperShames

I did not watch this. It is amazing to hear the thunder storm in winter. you took the chance to view the same so we can assume that the weather is really changing and nowadays the mercury has been decreased too much. Any thanks for the information.

Well, one of Santa Clause's reindeers is called Donner, which is German for Thunder ... You of course know that the strain that causes reindeer flu is H0H0H0, don't you?

This is rare, but nothing new. I live in northern Pennsylvania and over the years I have seen this four or five times that I remember, but not lately. The old timers use to predict a deep snow and long freeze after thunder over bare trees.

I suppose it has happened from time to time with how many years the planet has been here. Our planet is amazing.

I have never heard of it. I did not know it was possible even, to have thunder, during snow. It must be a rare weather event!

I have never seen that or heard of it either, but I guess anything can hapen at anytime. We just don't get that much snow here, and when we do get snow, it si very quiet and no thunder at all. that seems as strange as if it would snow in the summer when it is hot. take care, and have a good day.
