Tourist towns with spots that perfers locals...

Exploring our new area, we went to a town that people had told us was very artistic and interesting to stroll around. There was a lot of really neat shops, and everyone seemed so friendly. There were a lot of travelers there, and the locals there seem to have all lived in the town for a very long time. Since we went on a weekday, the restaurants I had on my list to dine at were actually closed, since the town is slower during certain days of the week. We decided to go to one that we saw that was open. When we entered, there was no friendly greeting that we had encountered many times that day. The owner/cook seemed annoyed we were there. My son was hungry and tired, so we ordered and hoped for the best. It was a pizza parlor, and when our pizza arrived, we patiently waited for plates, but he never returned. We went to get some, and he seemed aggravated we even asked. Any questions we asked the guy were given short answers. I thought perhaps he was having a bad day. Other customers came in, and suddenly, the guy changed. He had actual conversations with different people who came in, who all lived there. These people were friendly to us, though the guy seemed to care less if we were there or not. It seemed his business mainly catered to the locals there, as we never encountered other travelers at this location. Have you ever went to a place that was more of a tourist spot, only to encounter a business that prefers locals?

How strange.. not a nice way for them to act. Being nice to tourists can boost business because if you have friends travelling there you could recommend the great service you got. Instead you'll tell your friends to avoid that place.

I guess he is fine with only having locals there. He was really friendly with them. Our first clue should of been the tiny dining area. I am guessing it is a mainly carry out place. I am wondering if he hopes travelers tell others to not go there. He still has the townfolk to order there.

I still don't see how that's any way to run a business.. but there are other terrible business owners out there. One here in my town is a total jerk as well, and I've stopped going there.. but I guess he still has plenty of other business as they've been there for years.

There are people who make really poor business decisions who somehow manage to keep the customers. I am not sure how they do it. Whenever I encounter it, I just remind myself to never go there, write it up online to share with others if it is something I really want to get out there, and recommend against it whenever asked for an opinion.
