Reptiles For Pet

Pet Crocodile - Would you keep a crocodile as a pet? I know I wouldn't.

I am really not a fan or keen supporter with keeping reptiles for pet but I think I have heard of people keeping reptiles from lizards (various species), snakes and now crocodiles even. I don't know what are on the minds of adults today but I cringe at the sight of these thick skinned creatures on this earth. Much more when I see a photo of a child holding up a crocodile (small) in his arms. I really could not help thinking how insensitive this child's parents are. What do you think?

I wouldn't mind having a snake or lizard as a pet, but i can't see having an alligator or a child holding it. Tho with reptiles as pets you do need to think about their habitat and food. When you take an animal out of it's habitat as iv'e heard they can get depressed or die if u won't care for them properly. So even tho i might want a lizard or snake as a pet i'm not sure i could give it the right living conditions and food so i wouldn't have one. As for the alligator no way since they are dangerous.

The fact that these wild animals or reptiles can be depressed is quite our concern when these are actually the reasons when it will turn on their owners. If we can be so different with our choices, then I expect no less for them and makes it ever more sensible and right for them to remain in the wild than in our scarce and restricted confines. Besides, we have to be sensitive of the feelings of those who live with us under the roof where they may not even share the same interest or have the same passion for such exotically wild reptiles around.

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well yes u are absolutely right, even i cannot digest the fact that such animals are being kept at home as they might be dangerous also. No doubt there are some experts who keep them with care but danger might come to anyone anytime. So one has to decide properly before keeping them as pets. What say?

One of the big problems with keeping wild animals concerns their living conditions. These pet owners must ensure that they can provide the suitable and more importantly the correct living conditions namely space needed to accommodate them as they grow in size. As such, owners need to ensure that their enclosure is big enough for the animal and that it will be big enough when the animal grows larger, along with other additional conditions like lighting, so that the animal is active when we are active. Not forgetting, providing their ideal climatic conditions and social requirements (some species need to live alone while some in a group). Providing good conditions for a reptile can be very expensive – often several times the cost of buying the reptile. Also, since these reptiles have behavioral issues facilities need to be constructed correctly. Maintenance of usability, hygiene and even security is enough to take a toll on any owner. So, taking these reptiles as pets without due consideration is not only wrong but cruel as well. Also, if humans can fall sick how much so for these reptiles which can catch infectious diseases and as owners, we will risk exposure when we come into contact with them. So, I would really not consider to have them in my own confines - home.

I cannot imagine it either. No, I won't consider these animals as pets and wish other people will leave those reptiles to their habitat. I still prefer those common domesticated animals as pets.

I am for keeping domesticated animals as pets while those that rightfully should belong to the wild or nature reserves stay where they should. Keeping them as pets would be breaking their natural course of habitat and most of all, nature's cycles starting with the established food chain. We need to remember that these animals can grow in size and needs the space of open forestry. Keeping them in enclosed and limited confines will only be insensitive where the animal will be subjected to stress and dependency on human for their food. Also, I feel a lot of people ignore the dangerous side of these animals when they turn defensive.
