What is going on with American Airlines?

In December last year I read on the Internet that American Airlines is going bankrupt. Then today I read a conflicting story about it. I wonder if it is back up and running again. It is sad to see a national airline go bankrupt and go out of business. Do you know what is happening with American airlines?

AA and US Airways are in merger negotiations. I don't think that AA has suspended operations (may be wrong on this). The merger will create the world's largest airline company.
