A guy I know asked me randomly what's the difference between "beautiful" and "pretty". His question made me think really, really hard. These words seem synonymous to me. So I came up with this answer: Pretty pertains to the physical appearance only while beautiful pertains to both physical appearance and heart. How about you guys how do you differentiate beautiful from pretty. If you are a girl which word do you prefer to be described as? Well personally I would prefer being called beautiful, but pretty is also a compliment and I still will accept pretty.

you are absolutely right that this question is somewhat hard. but i guess beautiful is both related to the internal as well as external appearance of the person. it is in short the whole.but pretty is for one attractive or pleasing by the looks.

Hi Sporwal! In other words. We can say that all beautiful girls are pretty but not all pretty girls are beautiful. But both are compliments we should accept graciously.

I prefer to be called pretty because "beautiful" is too much and I think it's too good to be true. When I am called pretty by other people especially the guys who want to impress me (HAHAHAHHHA) i feel so overwhelmed because, being pretty for me is just like being simple, charming, young and adorable. But, this is only my opinion, of course, I do not speak in behalf of all the girls here in Mylot, haha.

Hi Pretty! Well yeah beautiful is kinda too good to be true ( I wish to be worthy of the title though). Well your definition of pretty is somehow cute. I'd like to be pretty too.

That's a PRETTY good question. Beautiful really reflects the physical features, as well as its essence in varied forms, although I'm PRETTY sure they are really synonymous, complimenting each one to create a well-deserving compliment, appreciation, admiration, et cetera.

It is very difficult to differentiate between them. Pretty means attractive, beautiful, cute, nice-looking, good-looking, appealing, sweet etc. Beautiful means good-looking, fine-looking, gorgeous, striking, handsome, stunning, attractive etc. These are synonyms of each other. Have a beautiful day.

Beautiful and pretty indeed are synonyms. It's just that some people use them differently and somehow I personally think beautiful is a bit superior than pretty even though I know they are synonyms. But well I accept both as compliments.

i think beautifull is to express about beauty only that mean only from physical or face. and pretty is most interesting for me even her face is not beatiful but she has different what i called by "X" so girl can look pretty and charming because of her X factor or personality.

Well I thought that "x factor" sort of pertains to being sexy than being pretty? But I am also on a quest here and I am not really sure what pretty means so you might be correct.

Oh this thread is pretty interesting. Lol, pretty is somewhat cute. Beautiful is stunning. So I could suggest beautiful word has more impact or is powerful than the pretty word. However, I don't think it implies attitude. For i have heard many times this sentence "she is beautiful but she is ugly inside". So I would think it doesn't indicate character.

Hello Pretty! You've got a point. There is indeed a saying that says "beautiful but ugly inside". Hmm, there is also a saying that beauty is only skin deep. But my beautiful is inside out. But I guess it depends on the person how he or she use the word "beautiful".

Beautiful is much stronger. You just don't call a girl beautiful if her beauty does not make one go "ahhh" and "ohhhh." Pretty is just, well, pretty, just pleasing to the eyes, nice. But when we say beautiful it means that the woman's face is distinctly and eye candy, you don't want to take your eyes off her.

Yes indeed beautiful is much stronger than pretty. Something which leaves us speechless. No "ohhh" and "ahhh". Just our jaws dropping.

beautiful is a woman whom u won't see any obvious abnormality on her face. every angle is pleasant to look at. With or with out make up, she looks adorable. A pretty lady is the opposite of the above, u see visible flaws on the face but she still look pleasant in the eyes.

Hi Luisar! You had an interesting answer. Well if I might rephrase you mean beauty is perfection and pretty is imperfectly attractive? Thanks for the new idea.

Hi Maria! When I was in elementary my teacher taught me that they are synonyms or words with the same meaning. So yeah they are closely related. :)

First of all let me declare that I m a male. From your given Pic, if it is you, i can say at least you are pretty. You have told correctly that the term pretty is related to your skin and body-line, where as beauty is related to your mind. The more you are confident, intelligent, knowledgeable you can be dignified as a beautiful person. So unless you interact with a person, you can hardly say how much beautiful she is.

hi Binay! Thank you for the compliment I am a bit flattered. You are precisely right. We cannot say how beautiful a person is unless we get to interact with them. Confidence is one thing indeed that can make someone more beautiful.

Pretty is less beautiful than beautiful. I prefer beautiful.

Same here. I'd prefer beautiful. But I still do accept pretty. I mean one would be a fool not to accept a compliment.
