Driving Distractions

Driving distractions can be dangerous. Just in my experience alone, I have been hit numerous times by people answering a ringing cell phone and in a hurry to get to work after dropping off someone else. One lady in an SUV ran into the pumps and exploded a gas station around the corner from my home when she decided she needed to run a yellow light, that coming to a safe, full stop was not an option for her. Another lady in an SUV was speeding around the pumps and through a gas station when she caught the attendant, who was knelt down checking the levels of gas in the below ground tanks. This driver caught the attendant under her vehicle and dragged her, not knowing my cousin was underneath, because the driver was in a hurry and on her cell phone at the time. Another driver had to block the SUV with her own vehicle to stop her and show her the attendant under her vehicle and get help. One insurance company has a commercial illustrating several driving distractions, including music, a chatty passenger, applying makeup, drinking and eating. The commercial is done as a comedy, but the accidents these distractions cause are not funny. Traffic accidents cause real life injuries, time off work, medical bills and difficulty carrying on one's daily life. All drivers need to make a conscious effort to reduce distractions so we can reduce accidents and allow our fellow citizens to carry on their daily lives.

I blame the driver more than the distractions. Distractions are everywhere, but how we react on it depends on us alone. It does make me mad to see busy drivers talking to their cellphones. One one this women is going to hit me because she's busy on her phone I have to give her a loud honk. That caught her attention and she mouthed an apology. Sheesh.

That's true it all depends on the person driving the vehicle that how he reacts to the situation. Some people handles distractions carefully as I have seen some drivers stoping or slowing down their vehicle when they have to answer the call. But some really doesn't cares and they continue to chat for long with their vehicle running. So it depends on the drivers.

Hello again, Raine and intel! Thanks so much for contributing to this convo. While legislation in the US currently only prohibits texting and driving, it's good to see more drivers pulling over to answer calls. I still prefer to turn my phone completely off before starting my vehicle. A friend who was a national championship athlete is now disabled because someone was on their phone and ran into her while she sat still at a light. That and the gas station attendant's dragging injuries and subsequent multiple surgeries have really made an impression on me.

Hi maria. Hope your day is going well. Poor Mexico struggles so greatly with passing and enforcing laws that we take for granted here in the States, at least that's what I read in the news. It's understandable that texting would be an enormous safety issue there. I hope things get better.
